Oh god read Ask the Dust. Such a great book, but /lit/ doesn't seem know anything about it. I highly recommend it, Fante's character development is terrific.

OP, people are just recommending Catch 22 because it's the only book they now of. Seriously, it's the same fucking 15 books that everyone always talks about and recommends.

This. Read The Forever War. Then pick up Forever Free (not a sequel). Then, now that you're a Haldeman fan, read Tool of the Trade and The Hemingway Hoax.

After that, fill yourself with sorrow, as most everything else he's written is kind of not good.
