I have just finished the second book of the Prince of Nothing, can someone clarify something.

At the end of the book, Cnair seems to think that the entire stringing up to a tree/Serwe thing was a master plan ploy by Kellhus.

However when we see Kellhus perspective he states he cannot see a way forward - he weeps when he is attached to Serwe, literally is fucked up attached to that metal ring.

Given Kellhus is like a hyper sociopath and his every move so far is planned out miles ahead of anyone else I can’t decide if Kellhus reaction is genuine or just part of his master plan.

I thought the writing was quite good and refreshing even though I'm not a fan of that pseudo Victorian witty narrative. The setting does feel huge and over the top, but it's still somewhat clever.
It was just a fun read to me, without any glaring issues, even if the side characters are slightly one-dimensional and quippy, the "adventures" are not particularly deep, etc. I really enjoyed them and I'm waiting for the last book to come out this year.

Has anyone read any classical wuxia novels? Authors like Jin Yong, Gu Long and Liang Yusheng. How are the translations?
I found some old forum that has translations for a lot of these novels, and some of them are on bookz but from what I can tell the translations are ripped from the forums anyway.

I have just finished reading "Altered Carbon" and I want to say that was one hell of a ride. It has been a long time since I have read a book with such an amount of worldbuilding and such a machiavellian, intricate plot. I just wish the author had made it clearer in the beginning how important that UN Proposition 653 was. By the time it became apparent how the plot really revolved around that proposition later in the book I had forgotten what it was about. It only got mentioned passingly in one or two earlier paragraphs in the book.

Depending on the specific definition of fantasy, this could be considered the oldest fantasy novel I've finished. I will now ignore all the implications of that statement. Because I didn't read this as a teenager I'm unable to indulge in nostalgia. If I had done so this would probably be a different review entirely.
For me this read like a montage. There's much progression though time and many events occur, but they are told about rather than experienced by the reader. It's almost like a transcription of someone who had told the story orally. That it was as such went against my preferences as it turned out. Would I have enjoyed it more if it were multiple times longer? I don't know.
Regardless of what I think about it, this has clearly been one of the most influential fantasy novels since LOTR. Even if the influence is indirect from an author being influenced by an author influenced by her, it's still present. The influences for it seem to be primarily mythological and philosophical rather than contemporary fantasy novels, but having not read them, this is more an assumption than statement of fact.
The magic is word-based and especially concerned with true names. It is stated that all uses of magic are for good or evil and they must all be balanced in the pursuit of equilibrium. Which to me seems to be a Ying & Yang magic system, which is the evidence of Taoist influence in this as well.
The world is somewhat interesting because it isn't the standard medieval European fantasy setting. I don't believe it'd become that in the later books either. It's an archipelago and there is much traveling between islands. At least a few of these islands are claimed by dragons.
I had previously looked at this and wasn't interested, but since it was the group read, I thought I may as well give it another try, since it's so relatively short. Unfortunately I didn't care about any of the characters or what they did, or much of anything overall. Mostly it was a sequence of seemingly unrelated events that happened, which is fine, but didn't provide sufficient incentive to read the next book. A book being a "classic" or "influential" doesn't matter much to me in terms of my enjoyment.

For one, if Bakker were 50% as popular as Martin I wouldn't hate Martin. Martin's problem is that he wasted everyone's fucking time on a story that ultimately lacked substance. Bakker might be a faggot left-wing leaf loser, and hell, he might have even given up like Martin obviously has, but UNLIKE Martin Bakker's series could end at the end of The Unholy Consult and it would be, if not ultimately satisfying, at least satisfying enough that one could put it down and accept that as the brutal ending that it was.

Martin's sin is that he sucked all of the oxygen out of "le grimderp fantasy XD" and then crashed it into a mountainside. He didn't just say "okay fuck it everyone dies and the White Walkers kill everyone" he just fucking gave up.

Just finished this. It was honestly better than I was expecting. Somehow I thought that this whole Bakker thing was a big ruse.

Just some thoughts:
The prose was actually amazing. You weren't joking about that part. I've never thought that a /sffg/ author could be this good.
Kellhus, as a character, is very interesting. It was fascinating to see that he has no morals and is neither "good" nor "bad"
The entire Esmenet and Achamian "arc" was brilliantly done too.
The world was Dark, but not horrible like some people made it out to be
The ending scene(s) were amazing.

I hope that the second book continues to deliver. I never felt bored.

Maybe you misunderstood me.

What I meant to say is that there were true moments of love and kindness in the midst of chaos. Most people were ass-holes, sure. But if you completely removed the magic aspect of it, the story doesn't feel artificial too me. But I got the hints the the world will only grow darker with each book.
