It's one of the better ways to start analyzing the Quran more seriously outside of the good tafsirs out there but you should keep in mind that Nasr is a perennialist. If you keep this bias in mind, you'll be fine.

Are tafsirs old commentaries?

>> No.17421014

>>17421004
Yeah they are. Most translations of the Quran are aligned with Sunni orthodoxy, but tafsirs are highly sectarian so keep that in mind if you wanna check some tafsirs out.

How about this?

Abdel Haleem isn't the greatest translation. Arberry and Pickthall are preferable. Not reading the Quran is preferable to whatever the hell is going on with the Sahih International translation.

I feel that I need some sort of commentary. I've attempted to read it and had no idea what was happening in the second surah

Is this supposed to make me hesitant to read it? I just want a traditional view of the meaning of the text. It seems like a lot of the commentaries coming out of America are propaganda to show that Islam is non violent

>> No.17421131

>>17421111
Check'd and in my opinion Islam isn't violent of non-violent, it's whatever the context demands in accordance with Islamic principles. Not using qiyas is akin to nominalism and relativism in it's chaotic effects, not that Ibn Taymiyyah is actually a nominalist (which is something Shaykh Hamza Yusuf believes lol).

Was gonna ask for this on both the Bible and the Qu'ran, since the historical context is extremely important.

In my opinion it isn't that bad but a lot of people say the translation is a bit off and I can see where they're coming from. I wouldn't use it if I were you. Picrel is accurate minus the bit on Haleem imo.

yeah, I still advise learning Arabic and reading it in its native language though.
>>17421026
This was the book used in my department back when I was an undergrad. We read it in combination with Watt and Bell's "Introduction to The Qur'an" and Donner's Muhammad and the Believers". I genuinely don't know why the head of the department, an Iranian, allowed this version given how dated the translation is.

I put yusuf Ali side by side with the rest and really complaining about being outdated is a meme. Sure it is old English compared to today, but deal with it faggot since it doesn’t have a bias like today’s standard

i own it and plan on selling if off, it's a physically beautiful book, leatherbound, nicer than my bibles, but it's just so crushingly dull. the translation is ugly and awkward compared to others out there, and the endless notes aren't particularly interesting, mostly states the obvious that you could get from the text yourself. i just use a cheap paperback of Pickthall's translation instead and look up any question i have online... a lot of tafsir's can be found as free pdfs via a simple google search
