Anyone else here got sucked into the webnovels and haven't read a propel novel for years? In the last 2 years I read maybe 5-6 proper novels, the rest is only webnovels like Worm, MoL or The Wandering Inn.
I don't know how to go back to books, published stuff is just too lacking, compressed, unelabroted...
How can anyone read 300 pages little story when you can have 1k pages long one?
This is the future. Books are simply inferior due to their physical constraints, you can't just print 1k pages long story unless you are some bigshot author.

So what got you guys in to book reading?
***********************************************

For me it was "The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy"

Before that, I believed all books were dull shit, were you spend 20 pages reading someone getting up out of bed and making coffee.
I remember in elementary school we had to read books aloud and they would force us to read a book about a girl and her horse, literally the daily life of a girl grooming and riding her horse. Then came the phase where we were supposed to read actual lit. The western canon is fine if you are advanced, but not very suited for high schoolers. School made me hate books.

Then one day as I was studying in the library I came across The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, and I thought it was such a weird and silly name. I opened it up just to read a bit. And to my surprise every page had something interesting, I was having more fun reading that book then playing many video games or watching movies. Obviously many books need to establish a world and characters, and they do not work well if they are fast paced. But fast books are great for hooking in new readers. This is also why I do not hate YA books, most kids books are to dull and tame, but YA seem to work very well in you are in high school and need to bridge the gap. They may not be as interesting to us now, but I like the fact that they exists.

But please tell us all how you guys came to read and love books.

The Alien Years - Robert Silverberg (1995)
This is an intergenerational family saga, which reminded me that I ought to find and read other similar books because it's a concept that I seem to enjoy. Unfortunately, I've also been burned by concepts I enjoy many times as well.
Although this is a fix-up novel, which means much of the content of the book is from previously published short fiction, in this case I didn't hold that against it at all. I usually do. I've previously read of one the stories before, The Pardoner's Tale, and it was interesting to see how it differed.
Sometimes it's helpful to have proper expectations before engaging with a work. I believe this is one of those times. A person can start something and expect to know where the story is heading based on what they've previously experienced and stake their projected enjoyment on that only to be disappointed when the work takes a different path.
There's an alien invasion, which is the plot for the entire book, but first and foremost this is a family saga. This isn't a story about joy, victory, or heroism. That by itself may be too off-putting for many. If you require the "why" of anything to be answered, then you'll be severely frustrated. The considerable amount of sex, the long and frequent descriptions of the bodies of various women, and the utter contempt that several of the men hold for women, will be deal breakers for others.
There are many viewpoints and no single character is the protagonist. This was a nice change of pace and I really should read more books that don't have any characters in a dominant narrative role. There are a lot of characters presented, but most of them only have minor roles, so it isn't that important to keep track of them.
The beginning was slow going, the entire first part really, but eventually I couldn't put it down and was completely engrossed. If you don't find yourself interested in the family and others, then it'll probably be a slow read from beginning to end for you.
This book was an unusual case in that most of the time I was reading I was considering how I ought to rate it and what sort of statement that would make. I remain conflicted, but I've rated this in terms of personal enjoyment. Take from that what you will as I'm uninterested in defending the aforementioned potential concerns about the content.
Many readers seem to have strongly disliked the ending for various reasons, which is understandable. The ending is entirely thematically appropriate for the book, but that's the problem in of itself. What the ending says about the book will be abhorrent and/or confusing to many readers.
I've rated this 5/5, but when considering what seems to be its reception, that may be mostly because of my personal biases and interests. This is not intended to be an endorsement for others to read this. As noted above, I've included the preceding disclaimer I believe it can be important to have realistic expectations.
Rating: 5/5

I can't for the life of me get the main plot of my story. I have the world, the setting, the character, and the vibe.

Right now I am considering having my protagonist completely destroy the entire lands that the story takes place in since the land itself is inherently evil. But isn't this a copy of Tolkien and destroying Mordor?

The other option is to have the protagonist destroy the main bad guy, who is a wizard. But that is just a copy of Harry Potter, where the main plot is to defeat Voldemort.

Should there even be a main overarching plot or goal, or should I just write about various events that take place in this world? What I like about Harry Potter is that each book is a self-contained event, but they all lead us further to the main plot of destroying Voldemort.

As a matter of fact, you are doomed to repeat the same fantasy themes and clichés. That's why the world you create is mostly irrelevant.

Some other Ideas:
- Do not over explain your world. Make it come alive naturally. Don't treat your readers like they're a bunch of retards. It's quite literally the worse thing you can do.
- Do not be afraid to show what characters are really thinking. People are overly judgmental and critical. That's the definition of "thinking".
- Don't be afraid of creating stupid characters. Even I find a hard time creating realistic stupid characters.
- Plan dialogues properly!
- Do not create unidimensional characters. This doesn't mean that you have to go full grey morality.

The characters will make the book come alive, not the other way around.
Every book praised on this general is like that.

I mean, that's the thing. Sanderson is fine if your English isn't good, but for most native, adult readers his vocabulary is too simple.
To compare, English literally is your second language, right? Pick up a book written in your native language and you'll surely notice a difference in how it feels to read because of your greater vocabulary. For us, reading Sanderson is not that different from reading a Japanese light novel that has been translated to English by some nerd, despite the fact that he writes in English to begin with.

Hello frens, I am attempting to follow Story Genius to create a SF/F novel. It will be set in the modern world, but one where people get superpowers through weird robot suits (I am very much ripping off Warframe for them,) and it will be about a male protagonist who gets one and learns to value freedom over comfort (as a theme, at least.) I post this to ask what age you think the protagonist should be for this kind of story. Thank you for any input. :)

If you can't fully realize your MAIN character, how the "modern world" would affect him and people of his age group and his growing up, at what point in his life he would reach such determination, if you don't know for what age group you're writing for, I don't think you're fit to write a novel.

Pic related is as worthy as any random suggestion.

Is anyone reading or have already read the Safehold series by David Weber? I just finished the fifth book, How Firm a Foundation. It's been a good series overall. There are a few crutches that weber leans on a bit like people murmuring instead of just talking, but overall I have liked the pace and characters. I'd like to see if anyone has finished the series and if they think it ends well.

There are no books in your posts either, you baiting faggots.
It might surprise you, but I actually like literature more than the indulging in shitposting. I don't use this general as if it was my own discord server nor am I here to pass the day posting nonsense like an utter retard. When people ask for recs or opinions, I try to give them. When I'm looking for something to read or some book catches my eye, I ask questions. For most of the books I've read for the past half year I've blogged about my progress and initial impressions and a brief review when I'm done. I even post my review charts from time to time.
Before the Sandershits and the Bakkerbots started literally spamming (at least the Sanderfags discussed their shitty books) about 2 months ago, I used to get one promising book every other thread to add to my backlog. Now people don't even mention books.

Want a book? How about Eifelheim, which I asked about 10 threads ago and, even though a couple anons said they were interested, they haven't posted anything afaik?

I'm working towards it with his novels. 10 still to go, but 6 of those are some of his realist/mainstream novels. I've read 3 of the realist ones already (Confessions of a Crap Artist, Mary and the Giant, In Milton Lumky Territory) and they're okay, but they're basically Richard Yates-lite.

What did you think of this one? It may be the most... I don't even know how to describe it? Best book at showing subjective views and reality-tunnels or a significantly accurate attempt at transcribing qualia. I liked it for that.
I have an ebook omnibus of his short stories if you want although it may be easy to find at the usual places too.

It's definitely the best of his realist books I've read - I can see why it was the only one of those actually published in his lifetime. The others I've read are much more mundane, and don't have much to distinguish them from other general fiction of the time.

Most of his books (including the story collections) are on lib gen. A lot of the newer posts there are the retail versions too, much better than old OCRed versions riddled with errors.
