Are there any books you deem essential for understanding the world we're in today? The questions is very vague, I know, but I'm considering books on topics such as history/politics/economy/philosophy/psychology etc. It would be interesting to see /lit/'s take.

Dialectic of Enlightenment.

Horkheimer and Adorno were not the first to notice the way that the enlightenment of the 18th century reorganized our entire subjectivity, but they're probably the first to explain it so thoroughly. The way seemingly all modes of being prioritize instrumental and totalizing logic and the dehumanizing efficiency calculus that this invariably spawns is an essential idea for understanding the history of the 19th, 20th, and 21st centuries. They're not prophets and there are definitely aspects they got wrong, but its still very impressive that their analysis can provide insights into everything from why did the soviet union fail to bring about its early vision of a truly equitable society, to why are we all so miserable if by every objective metric we're wealthier and more safe and secure than ever, to even why #activism and contemporary radical political movements never seem to accomplish anything (left and right).

He treads the same ground, but Foucault also has a similar project with his various archaeologies from what I've read. Attempting an analysis of why do we have the type of subjectivity we do, and where did the ideas that dominate it come from, and what do they accomplish. He also ends up pointing to the late 18th century for the most part.

The big 19th century Russian novelists arrived at a similar critique of enlightenment, although by different means and their solution is pretty undercooked religious metaphysics. Still, the reduction of the human from a sacred being to a secular object of rationalized discourses, and the way this affects how we look at ourselves and the world, is a profound observation and a thematic throughline in things like Gogol's Dead Souls, Dostoyevsky's The Idiot, and Tolstoy's War and Peace.

Fiction writers for whatever reason tend to pick up on the currents of an age far before theorists can present a thorough exegesis and analysis of them, so don't shy away from reading (good) fiction in your efforts to understand what is happening in the world.

Libido Dominandi: Sexual Liberation and Political Control
It lays out very convincingly, with all the historical background, how modern man is being manipulated and controlled through his passions/desires.
>“Thus, a good man, though a slave, is free; but a wicked man, though a king, is a slave. For he serves, not one man alone, but what is worse, as many masters as he has vices.”
St Augustine
The book’s thesis is that the man who is a slave to his own vices is easily manipulated, hence why they are pushing degeneracy on us and disintegrating the old figures of authority such as family, tradition, and religion.
This is a much more effective method of political control than coercion.

>In a covenant concluded among proprietor and community tenants for the purpose of protecting their private property, no such thing as a right to free (unlimited) speech exists, not even to unlimited speech on one's own tenant-property. One may say innumerable things and promote almost any idea under the sun, but naturally no one is permitted to advocate ideas contrary to the very purpose of the covenant of preserving and protecting private property, such as democracy and communism. There can be no tolerance toward democrats and communists in a libertarian social order. They will have to be physically separated and expelled from society. Likewise, in a covenant founded for the purpose of protecting family and kin, there can be no tolerance toward those habitually promoting lifestyles incompatible with this goal. They – the advocates of alternative, non-family and kin-centered lifestyles such as, for instance, individual hedonism, parasitism, nature-environment worship, homosexuality, or communism – will have to be physically removed from society, too, if one is to maintain a libertarian order.
