Quote a writer in conversation is cringe?

>> No.17401370

Naming the author is more cringe than saying "I read the other day that..."

Why would it be?

If it's fitting, no. If you can put the point of the statement into your own words then yes it was unnecessary, however if the point rests on this particular thinker saying it, and the point isn't just narcissism, then it's fine and fitting.

You dont even need to quote, just say the phrase without reference and you will appear as smart.

People do it all the time with movie dialogue so I don't see why quoting a writer (as long as it is relevant/humorous/right context) should be a problem. The bigger issue you face is knowing your audience.

I suspect the urge to cringe is rooted in body language.

There are two cringes I can think of off the top of my head. The first is a cringe of disgust, a shudder upon witnessing a revolting habit, and mirror neurones trigger a revolt.

The second is the cringe of the meek in the face of awe-inspiring power.

Again, I would anticipate that the cringe mentioned in OP's post of quoting an author in a conversation is only felt by plebians who can't begin to grasp the intellectual subtlety of the act, and perhaps they shudder at their own idiocy.

ONly if you're using it to show off your epic knowledge of literature, which is narcissistic and best to be avoided.

It's only cringe if you apply it wrong.
There is a time and place. Some conversations lead to a certain point where a famous quote is so obviously perfect to use, you can't not help but mention it.
But people are able to tell if you are trying to shoehorn in quotes that don't really fit, in order to make yourself look smart. Like if you're having a conversation about some Netflix show and you throw in an Oscar Wilde quote, people can see through that shit.
