It might be that I'm dumb but there are just some parts that I just have to re read in order to understand them. One example of this weird writing that I saw is this one, " they didn't have only a guard of four hundred soldiers, and so we would lay in ambuscade..." is the little things that get to me whenever I read something starting "they didn't have only" I expect some sort of 'but' somewhere in order for it to make sense but there wasn't any not to mention no one really starts a sentence or part of a sentence with "they didn't have only." I haven't finish the book but so far this is my only complaint.

It's written in a vernacular. It's not proper English but in Huck Finn's voice.

THAT IS A LITERARY DEVICE CALLED: «ELLIPSIS».

IT IS NOT THE AUTHOR'S FAULT, BUT, RATHER, YOUR IGNORANCE DUE TO LITERARY INEXPERIENCE.

I see, I'm just asking because I'm not a big reader so I tend to have difficulties reading books that are structure weird. I just picked this book at random while strolling a book store. The only other book besides this one that I managed to finish was the great gatsby and that book's writing was very unique. I guess I'll just get used to the unique writing of this book.
