His taxonomy of the human emotions is insanely autistic but at the same time hard to disagree with. I feel like if you memorized all the propositions and definitions and so forth you could use this knowledge to your advantage in life, for better or worse.

What does Spinoza make of consciousness?

>> No.17391928

I read a book that was basically a condensed version of the Ethics with selections from his other work as well. It's the only time my outlook on life has improved after reading a philosopher.

This is what I remember from the history of phil lectures I've attended
He calls consciousness "mind", and he thinks it's the idea of a body. When a body x is that body x, then it has also a representation (or "idea", to use Cartesian lingo) of the idea of the body x.
Every body that has a conatus also has a mind (this is a potential solution to the problem of other minds).
I don't remember exactly what the conatus is, but it had something to do with striving and self-preservation. If a body can self-preserve itself in time (if it can mantains its structures), then it has a conatus. This means that even rocks have minds, while gaseous and liquid bodies don't have one, although their components (i.e. their electrons) do, they just don't "add up" to a mind

every opinion or view you adopt from a book is a larp. And I don't mean by definition. I mean it is in your nature, yes YOUR nature, to be inauthentic.
