I've been wanting to write/read porn novels. Anyone have any suggestions so I can get a feel for the genre? Preferably not litrpg since I hate isekai and not rainbowroad for the same reason and because I heard they ban outright smut. (though I might be wrong about that.)

Permutation City - Greg Egan (1994)
As with most anything that Egan has written, this is all about the ideas. If that isn't sufficient, then you'll probably not find this to be sufficiently enjoyable. The central idea, Dust Theory, can't be reasonably described as anything other than insane, and almost every character treats it as such. Readers who are dismissive and/or contemptuous of it and the other ideas in the story may find this book a tough and unproductive slog. Although there are a few viewpoint characters they're all still about their own ideas.

This is a novel in two parts, which in effect reads like a novel followed by a novella. The first part is entirely self-contained, but if you read only that, then it becomes an entirely different work, which is interesting by itself. As a result, it'd be possible to read the second part by itself as well, but that would be ridiculous. Based on the reviews I read, a significant number of people would've preferred that entire novel was written in the style of the second part, but I disagree.

The book begins with existential computation experiments and then goes to organic chemistry simulations, so after you've read those you'll have a general idea what rest of the book will be like. You may find that you'll enjoy that more than it sounds like. The only way to know for sure is to try it out, maybe more than once if it doesn't work the first time.

There are philosophical and religious arguments, though sometimes the difference between them can be difficult to tell, despite Egan being a professed atheist. Each character has their own arguments for how life ought to be lived and what matters in it. I found myself agreeing with some and entirely rejecting others, but enjoyed reading about them regardless of how I felt about the arguments.

Our current year is catching up to some technological mentions in the book, which perhaps is only to be expected with technological optimism. The 2020 mention has come and gone and next is the 2024 mention of "ran a fully conscious copy of himself in a crude Virtual Reality" which doesn't seem likely. Most of the book takes place in the mid 2040s and early 2050s. When those years come, I wonder if the book will be looked upon as quaint like those from mid-20th century often are. The years are merely anchors for the ideas of an age.

It's difficult to express what specifically I enjoyed. Maybe it's simply that the book describes going through the process of an insane idea that has to be taken on faith step-by-step. Once I settled into reading it, I was completely absorbed. Permutation City will remain among the top novels that I enjoyed reading this year.

Are there any books or series with a similar “feel” in terms of atmosphere and writing style to Harry Potter? It wasn’t the best thing ever, but it was very pleasant to read. The characters felt real and likable, the writing was simple but painted vivid pictures, and the world was easy to get immersed in.

I've recently started re-read the Aspect Emperor series, but I only read select POVs chapters. For example I finished reading Achamian's chapters like a single book not related to others.
Now I'm reading Kelmomas chapters like a single, standalone book. Just try it, there are stuff that pop up and make the main characters much more interesting. I never would have guessed but Kelmomas is now probably my favorite character in the Aspect Emperor series.

CS Lewis is very definitely a writer for all ages. You get a lot more out of Narnia when you're more knowledgeable about the allegory. Also his other works are equally good or better. Till We Have Faces is my favorite book, it's his telling of the Psyche myth.

One of my favorite aspects of Book of the New Sun is that Wolfe can paint a picture with words that's at the same time, totally up to individual interpretation yet gives you a very clear mental image. Are there any other authors or novels that can do something similar?

Pretty good, yeah. As I grow older and my sense of humor changes, a bit of his humor doesn't quite land like it used to, but that's mostly because of 'seinfeld is unfunny' syndrome and nothing of his quality. He almost always keeps his politics out - almost being the keyword. And there was one weird stretch of three novels straight where he reused the exact same plot of 'magical futuristic item appears in Discworld so people go through a sudden industrial or cultural revolution that's undone at the end because this item is actually evil.' Moving Pictures, Soul Music, and that guards book with the gun. (The last is also the first one I noticed his politics seeping in.

But over all, I find it hard not to give him a solid 9/10 at worst. The books are good.

Just re-read H Beam Piper's Lord Kalvan of Otherwhen for the first time since high school twenty years ago. Was one of my favorites back then. The novel holds up pretty well as an example of isekai fiction, though Calvan Morrison has a hint of Gary Stu about him.

I just read each of the Narnia books around Christmas time since I had them on the shelf and only read The Lion The Witch and The Wardrobe when I was 9 in grade school. I enjoyed them all since I haven't done much reading this past year. Very quick easy reads and it's nice to have a heroic fantasy story that doesn't dodder and spend time talking about huge battles for pages and pages. The Last Battle unironically brought me to fat, blubbering tears for 3-5 minutes at the end when a character appears after I had a family member pass away recently. I would probably rate them in order of: Horse and his Boy>Voyage of the Dawn Treader>The Silver Chair>The Last Battle>The Lion The Witch and the Wardrobe>Prince Caspian>The Magician's Nephew
Characters are fairly simple and many repeat archetypes that others already have, but that shouldn't put you off too much.

Just know that plebs read them in chronological order, patricians read them in publishing order, but kings read them in alphabetical order.
