>Mo Yan - Life and Death are Wearing Me Out
I got a bunch of store credit for Christmas and I decided to spend it on something new. I liked Republic of Wine, this came out last year, the publisher does small print runs and it's a nightmare to find their shit second hand, so given my general interest in Chinese literature it was a given that I'd cop it after I found it on accident online.
The edition itself is a bit bare bones. No table of contents, no notes, nothing. It's Spartan.

>Liu E - The Wanderings of Lao Can
A late Qing-era novel about a wandering practitioner of medicine. Never heard of it before I found it on accident while looking through random lists for uni.
Seems kind of interesting, but it's a low priority for now. I only copped it because it was cheap and you never know when it might get sold again for that cheap, if at all.

>Alajos Mécs - Unknown Japan
It's an old collection of writings from the 20s and 30s. Book itself was published in 1942.
Really, the only reason I got it is because I hope the author wrote down some interesting anecdotes in it, and that the last chapters talking about "Japan the Conqueror" and "Japan the Terrible" will have that weird, old right wing style that always makes me smile for some reason.

Currently reading these before bed.
Goldfinger is cozy
Wolf in the Whale is interesting, I’m not far enough into it to make a sweeping statement on its quality, but I am enjoying the strangeness of it- apparently the multi gendered reincarnation stuff is lifted directly from Inuit folklore- I’d like to do some research of my own, and the author helpfully provides a fuckload of primary sources

this post was made by a literal retard. If you read the translations of loeb, you are literally retarded. If you know latin and ancient greek, then loeb is great. Penguin and oxford have the best translations and the best critical apparatus, though penguin usually edges out oxford on translation. Hackett is okay, sometimes have some good ass translators like Lombardo. Cambridge is fine too. But dover is absolutely shit. Same with wordsworth.

Penguin front-loaded their translations with Lydia Davis', which is good in an exactly-what-Proust-said way. They get worse after that.

Just read it in French

When the work isn't translated (or the public domain translation is good), they are the best bang for your buck.

I found Penguin editions of Don Quixote and The Count of Monkey Crisco at Goodwill the other day. Great condition. Never read Don Quixote and I actually really, really enjoy it. Guess it's a classic for a reason.

>Ah, I see. I might purchase it then in the future if language doesn't play a huge part in it. Hopefully it doesn't run out of stock since it seems to be a pretty rare book. Also, do you suggest reading Paintings in Proust before or After you've read a volume of the series?
I need to check how much text is in that book, give me some minutes
Personally I'd read them simultaneously. The recherche is huge, you may forget something if you read it after
if the book goes chronologically, it would be great: after you read about a painting & stuff you read the corresponding part in the other books

This is mostly from my local used book shop's going out business sale. Everything was 75% off, so I got some stuff that now seems a little questionable. I got caught up in the savings and now I'm not sure I actually want to read all these

okay well, it has more text than I expected (half of the pages, few lines tho)
even if they are just descriptions and references on Proust's work

so it may not be actually worth if you don't know italian
maybe you could find a pdf copy online or something.. idk

>Dover
This isn't /sci/, and dover is shit. I appreciate their $10 reprinted math textbooks for what they are, but they should be below penguin.

Also, what is SUNY doing up there? I have never seen a book from them and I wouldn't expect anyone to consider them an Oxford/Cambridge level publisher.

The more I look at your list the less sense it makes. I think you just took some books you own and like and wrote down what you saw on the jackets.
