Hello, /lit/.

Some of you may have heard of me. My name is Rachel Haywire and I am a musician as well as an artist and a writer. My work has appeared in "Generation Hex," an anthology of work aimed at the esoteric, at the obscure, at the downtrodden and mentally ill. My work is meant for the Beta Generation, for Humankind 2.0.
My newest book, Acidexia, is looking for a publisher. It's a collection of stories about my life, about transcendental anarchy, counterculture, about feminism, about dadaism, about experimentalism and anti-art art. My work needs your support.

I convey a message with my writing. That we are the Gloominati. The counter-media. The overhaul of the Post-Web 2.0 Generation. With the aid of cyberspace we have ascended to an unexplored level of consciousness. We are the top 1 percent of the bottom and we control the world. How does it feel?

Jesus christ it's sad how these people don't understand the current cultural climate.
Nobody wants this. The average non-conformist these days has accepted their individualism is itself a product of ideological shaping. The black sheep have flocks, now. And they stick to their flocks the same as anyone else.
You need much better rhetoric than vague inchoate assumptions. Immediately nominating yourself the cultural heirs to the Beats only proves how bland and uninspired you are, and thus uninspiring. The Beats already had heirs: they were called hippies.

The purpose of her artistic project is to snow-job the geezers who make up most of the audience for literary fiction into thinking she's 'an expert on the internet' or something. I've come across a number of these frauds on my travels through academia, and it's always amusing to see how transparent they can get without the marks getting wise to them. The short answer is it gives her an inviolable sense of security, in contrast to the later episodes where her identity and self-sameness begin to unravel.

The more pretentious answer is that the bear suit symbolizes the absurdity of the embodied self. Our fantasy that we are autonomous and discrete egos, buffered and abstracted from the world, is disected again and again throughout the series. Of course the real revelation is that at the though the embodied self may be a myth, it is nevertheless tenacious, and doesn't lose its power simply because it isn't real..

Nah, I just used a lot of words to say very simple things.

To over-simplify things, there are two kinds of ways to think about yourself in relationship to the world: the porous and the embodied self. Basically, the porous self is a pre-17th century way about thinking of oneself. One is influenced by supernatural forces, like gods, fairies, demons, angels and astrology. One is basically exposed to the forces of a magical, enchanted world.

But in the 17th century, Descartes proposed a new kind of relationship to the world: the embodied self. Charles Taylor writes, "The buffered self is the agent who no longer fears demons, spirits, magic forces. More radically, these no longer impinge; they don't exist for him; whatever threat or other meaning they proffer doesn't 'get to' him." The new "disengaged rational agent" must employ "true generosity" in a self-conscious way to tame his passions and ensure he acts in accord with a "higher morality": "What moves us now is no longer a sense of being in tune with nature, our own and/or that in the cosmos. It is something more like the sense of our own intrinsic worth; something clearly self-referential."

So essentially, the belief in the embodied self is just about as laughable as the belief that Lain's bear suit will keep her sense of self and identity intact. Her bear suit cannot protect her when she falls down the rabbit hole of The Wired, and her identity becomes porous, and vulnerable to the demons, spirits and magic forces she meets there. That's all.

There is some subtext that she is autistic or has asperger's syndrome. In otherwords, she is very intelligent but also very lonely, socially isolated and immature. Her dressing up as a bear is supposed to represent that and is also a symptom of her autistic behaviors. It's what psychologists call a "stimulatory activity" or "stim", which are comfort habits autistic people use to make themselves feel secure, because they need repetition and routine of certain habits, even if those habits seem strange to others. That is what the bear pajamas are about.

The meaning to Donnie Darko was pretty damn obvious on the first watch. Time runs in a loop. Donnie kills Frank after Frank kills Gretchen. Donnie is torn with guilt so he travels back in time to kill himself so that Gretchen can stay alive. He creates a new universe where neither Frank nor Gretchen dies. The Frank Donnie keeps seeing in the bunny suit is a ghost of Frank trying to convince Donnie to set time back on course. When Frank says "the world will end" he simply means, "this timeline, in which I and Gretchen both die, will end. Instead you'll create a new timeline where you die to save us." So Donnie travels back in time to let himself get killed.

Really stylish, yes, but that doesn't make up for the fact that the film makes no fucking sense. The implication was that there is "God's channel," or Predestination. Basically it's a timeline and reality based on doing what God expects and wants someone to do, and the implication that traveling outside the channel in the name of self-interest has disastrous results. The Jesus parallel is that it's necessary for someone to sacrifice themselves to alter the future - Donnie is a metaphorical Christ figure, but certainly not Jesus in a literal sense. Donnie is just about as much "Jesus" as E.T. is. Parallels, and a story with the same plot and perhaps meaning, but not the son of God himself, nor the savior of all mankind.

>> No.1734100

It's a movie pretty much tailor-made for teens to relate to. "Angsty, alienated, rebellious, and smart but with a few problems." How most teens would describe themselves and also how Donnie Darko is shown. Most teens can relate to that. Most teens have okay to good grades but also see society as unjust and have to put up with constant medication for bipolar or ADHD. Most teens feel like they need something to stand up against and challenge (the way Donnie challenges the guest speaker at the school) and most teens want to be heroes, the way Donnie Darko is, even if it means being a flawed hero.

I think that when you grow out of that phase you sort of stop relating to Donnie Darko and the film loses some of its meaning and charm.

Work need not be made with meaning, but rather with the ABSENCE of meaning, as a challenge to works which are created with the intent to make a statement. I find Haywire's rebellion a little cliche, yet I aspire to many similar things. I'll share my thoughts.

Dada and Futurism sound extremely seductive when you first hear of them. The Cabaret Voltaire, Futurist provocation, absurdist manifestos, riots, mobs, angry bourgeoisie. Noise music, masks, improvised arts of all mediums. Yet the truth of the Dada and Futurist movements is less pretty. They fizzled out, most of the Futurists were killed in WWI, since futurism espoused war as a good thing most of them enlisted. The Cabaret Voltaire didn't last a year before audiences got tired and fights amongst Dadaists split the group.

The desire to imitate revolutionary avant-guarde movements makes sense, I think the beginning of the 21st century is looking a lot like the beginning of the 20th. But the tactics used by the Dadaists and Futurists have been co-opted by mainstream media. Everyone wants to be Lady Gaga, everyone wants to make a punk band that is harder and more offensive than punk bands that came before. People are cynical, no one is shocked anymore. No one rallies against lady gaga, tossing tomatoes and calling the police to break up mobs that happen at her concerts. People either *love it* or simply don't fucking care, and let out a groan when it comes up in conversation or on the radio.

Being Counter-Culture is a matter of style. You have a million options. Communist, Hippy, Satanist, Dada, Indie Hipster, Symbolism, Surrealism, Otaku, etc. You can collage a new version of any of these. Where does it get us? I struggle with this question daily. I am unsatisfied with the status quo of art. I like a wide variety of counter culture movements, yet I can't really ascribe myself to any of them. They're all dead. And if I encountered any in the present, I'd probably scoff and go "Yeah right".

I'm reminded of a conversation in Jane Austen's Sense and Sensibility. Marianne and Edward are discussing "The Picturesque" a fashionable romantic notion of beauty in the sublime, it extols the beauty of ravaged landscapes, jagged hills, ruined castles, etc. Its a precursor of Symbolist thought. Edward says that he can't understand it, and that a hill that marriane calls "Bold" he merely calls "steep". He then criticizes the amount of usage of these terms and how it has become empty jargon. Marriane laments this fact, that picturesque has succumbed to its own ideals, it is dead.
Punk is Dead. Yet i see punks where this slogan on t-shirts.

Didn't they teach you about metaphors and similes in grade school? I simply made a symbolic reference to the movement of art terrorism and all that it embodies. Destroying established cultural values creating works that destroy the established institutions on which they're based. Undermining and destroying society at its core. Using art to bomb and kill and destroy the foundations of all of the sickness and filth it holds pure. Anti-Totalitarianism in the form of Anti-Order. That is the essence of Neo-Dada.

This is a point I've thought about. Mainstream media is happy to take the tactics of revolutionary media, remove the revolutionary and content and neuter it. If you think of this like consumption, Mass Culture eats Counter Culture. Does that change the Mass Culture? It might, but not in the way the revolutionary culture was looking for or in smaller amounts. Revolutions do occur, think of sex in the 19th century and sex in the 20th. The Free Love hippy movement might have been a disaster, but were their positive side effects? Can revolutionary culture hope for anything more than side effects?

OH FUCKING CHRIST. Dada IS dead.

The Cabaret Voltaire was an actual cabaret, a theatre in Zurich durring the 1910's, Tristan Tzara, Hans Arp, Hugo Ball, Marcel Janco, Emma Hennings, Huslenbeck. DADA. Not some band from the 70s.

The neo-hippy movement is my least favorite at all. The bunch of tattooed faggots that meditate to Shpongle and are always talking about "spiritual energies," "the age of Isis," and numerology and shit. I mean, I really feel sorry for people that think they are improving their minds by taking tons of acid and claiming to have "shamanic visions." Most of these people are dropouts from college, haven't held down a job for more than a month, and are just fucking sad. All in the meanwhile I've been going to school full-time and working my ass off so I can get resume experience, good recommendations, and a way to pay back my loans. I look at the "counter-culture" movements and all I see is a bunch of sad manchildren trying to escape from reality.

Thats deffinately the view someone outside a counter culture has. When you don't feel part of mainstream culture, things like money and jobs don't matter much. When you don't want to buy a home, start a family and retire in some nice town in arizona, you realize that a surprisingly small amount of money is needed to live.

I personally don't buy mainstream ideas about money and security. I am destitute, I did graduate college, and I was smart enough to do so for free. When I look out at the world from the balcony of my slum appartment, I feel totally lost as to what I should do in that world. I read, I write, I make art and sometimes even partake a little in some Dada absurdism. It feels empty though, and if it does feel fullfilling it wears off in a matter of days, weeks or months. Still, when i seem other people my age, getting married, getting divorced, getting mortgages and car loans, being unhappy and frustrated, I don't think I've made any worse of a descision. At least I have less stress.
