What are some history books you’ve read about shit you weren’t interested in, which you found compelling and engrossing anyway?
I read No Man Knows My History, a biography on Joseph Smith and the history of early Mormonism. Fucking fantastic, I couldn’t put it down

me neither. I was ready to go on a mormon mission for 2 years. I had my application forms ready, had done my physical and everything. it was just a matter of turning them in. I saw this book in the library and read it in 2 days. and it was totally devastating. I felt the whole world crashing on me, realizing that there was no god, and nothing will happen after we die.
a couple years later, I read Rough Stone Rolling, by practicing patriarch, ex-bishop, ex-stake president, and mormon scholar Lyman Bushman, and that book was probably 10 times more discouraging than Brodie's book. this was one of the few books that changed my life

Imagine needing a book to realize how ridiculous Mormonism is

Is it really that readable? I'm interested in the topic, but thought the book might be a taxing read.

Oh, come on. If you were born in a Mormon community you'd believe it too. Hell, if you were born in ancient Canaan, you'd be worshiping a cow right now.

I was born into a catholic family and by age 6 I had reasoned that nothing supernatural existed. I’d like to think I would have resisted a more cult like entity like the mormons too
