Hey /lit/, /k/ommando here.

I've got a few months of being locked on a boat in the middle of the ocean coming up, and I'd like to learn about Ancient Rome. I've done some research, and a few of the same books keep popping up, and I was wondering if I missed any essentials. I've already read Meditations. Ideally, I'd like to focus more on the Legion itself and the religion specifically, but a basic understanding of the people and government itself is also desired.

So far I've got The Twelve Caesars by Suetonius and Rubicon by Tom Holland. The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire is definitely on the list, but not at this time because I'd like to read something else besides a six volume series while I'm gone.

The book I just finished is Relentless Strike by Sean Naylor, fucking fascinating and I highly recommend if you're into GWOT and military history, and is no way related to Rome, just wanted to point out that it's great.

Also, you guys do generals here? How about an info thread?

By understanding of the people, you mean their day to day living?

There is a series, I can't remember its name. You should ask this on /his/, anon. I'm sure they know better bibliography than /lit/.
