Negative space vector masks are a design trend that will age faster than goat milk, and is frequently employed by hacks because it looks superficially interesting to the same plebs that have 'simple pokemon vector' wallpapers

Dune and Children are inoffensive.

On Messiah the the moon appears as if there is no atmosphere, but it's clearly supposed to be on Arrakis. There's an orange smudge on the horizon. Maybe it's supposed to be the glow of the city, or the sunrise. What it looks like is a short stroke with a large soft brush with too much flow.

On GED Leto II 's silhouette doesn't effectively convey anything about him and it's boring to boot, he looks like a generic fantasy dark lord. The interior scene is another fucking desert and the composition is particularly uninteresting.

Heretics has the nicest interior scene except the entire thing has been blurred (look at high res version)and the orange smudge is back. This resembles a glow even less than the one on Messiah and straight up looks like a mistake. If the artist wanted to bring some complementing colour into the scene they could have added an orange tinge to the planets instead, or bother to make it looks like an actual fucking sunrise

Chapterhouse. Reusing the worm would be easier to excuse if the worms were a bigger part of the book, or if Chapterhouse was a mirror of Dune. But Chapterhouse is the middle book in an unfinished trilogy

As an addendum every eye on the cover has the glow effect achieved by a layer filter. This makes it appear not as a light that emits rays that reflect off the rest off the face but as a backlit plane.

Tl;dr, Your book cover should not look like a spruced up Homestuck panel

An upward slopped sand path in the middle of a rocky desert. Two characters are climbing it in the center. The only strange thing is that the rocky hills are shaped like screws coming out of the ground. Way too thin and vertical.

They look ok, remind me of CG artwork for 2000's video games (e.g. Diablo 2 cutscenes). But I prefer more abstract covers for books, otherwise they influence my imagination too much.

Picrelated is the edition I bought when I first read it. I think it's ugly.
Never bought any of the other books on paper, but I have listened to all six as audio books, in addition to reading Dune and Dune Messiah.

You got to be fucking kidding me. The Catch-22 Hulu adaptation was the shittiest thing I ever saw. It captured none of the black humor of the book, none of the insane bureaucracy, none of the funny logic. What passes for 'comedy' in this adaptation is George Clooney fondling some guy's testicles. Their biggest mistake was to focus on the plot, which is the least important part of the book! If you want to watch Catch-22 on the screen, watch the Mike Nichols film. Don't compare that Hulu shitfest with Joseph Heller's masterpiece.
