>weather is bloomin marvellous so head out to the park to read
>sitting under the shade of a tree and a girl walks past
>sits down next to me and asks me what i'm reading
>Under the Volano by Malcolm Lowry, but i'm almost finished
>she giggles and tells me that's funny whilst placing her hand on my leg (wut)
>i try to move away but she sites next to me and i can feel her breath in my ear
>begins to tell me how much she loves literature, and hates people who read shit like Twilight
>tell her that taste is subjective and she shouldn't be so quick to judge books she obviously hasn't read
>she guffaw's loudly in my ear and lights up a cigarette
>asks me if i want one and i say no i don't like cancer thank you very much
>begins to tell me about how she listens to avant garde jazz to be 'ironic' and that her fav book is Dante's Inferno
>inform her she misused the term 'ironic' and also that if she didn't read the Divine Comedy in it's entirety she's a casual
>she gets offended and tells me her other favourites include fantasy books such as A Son-
>stop her there and inform her that if she's wants to escape reality she should just kill herself.
>tell her i have to leave and she tries to give me her number
>politely take it as she kisses me on the cheek
>go home to bleach my skin and give her number to a homeless man, telling him the piece of paper is a lottery ticket.
>vomit on him and apologise.

So what does /lit/ think about Under the Volcano? 50 pages left and would definitely recommend to everyone.

You have to be extremely vain. Adam Smith describes vanity as the state of believing your own abilities and status to be in excess of what they are. So it doesn't matter what you eat, wear or read, so long as you look down your nose at all those other plebes eating, wearing or reading their inferior things.

>if she didn't read the Divine Comedy in it's entirety

We don't write it that way because if we did, it could be confused with "it's" meaning "it is", which it obviously doesn't mean in this sentence. I recommend learning English before attempting writing.

Also, the popularity of this thread is almost only made of comments like mine telling you how bad you are and how you can't spell for shit, so I wouldn't capitalise on that fact to defend myself.

You need to read more before you write. Once things like "it's" for "its" become obvious to you and make your eyes bleed, then you'll have the required level to attempt writing. If you don't take words seriously, nobody will take you seriously either.

3/5 this. There's more to't than you know. I liked the blue ball feeling the author had going with the tragedy, that was relieved with the orgasmic ending, though the propheticism was seemingly bland. Lowry is better at developing critical allusion, comedy, anecdote, and exposition than an ending. Taking a lesson from Joyce, whose influence is evident, what with the temporal similarities and modernist mood, the ending should have retained the blueballism that I referred to earlier... Otherwise, Lowry should have annihilated the cathartic tension in the most post-modern, nihilistic way possible, by overcoming the new-orthodox, not with previous orthodox, what with the tragic ending, but with something like what Burgess or Bolaño did with 2666. It was not because the latter died that the ending was so abrupt, he could have very well produced the ending before his own, though better reasoning is that there is some verisimilitude in that the author does not want to kill his alter ego or it will be the death of his self. Like Wallace, Lowry was too egotistical to finish his novel in a satisfying way, and the two probably passed from this world much like Godel drove himself mad with his theorems that axiomatic arithmetic was unprovable.
