But most of art's history is about subverting something. Whether its culture or artistic standards or even artistic movements (like Romanticism subverting Classicalism, Modernism subverting Romanticism, etc.) For example, Canterbury Tales subverts a lot of Medieval culture in The Monk's Tale and The Wife of Bath's Tale. Even Shakespeare was subverting English culture in Hamlet with his blend of Catholic and Protestant ideals.
