Favorite prose work is a tie between Seraphita by Balzac, Gods of pegana by Dunsany and the Chymical wedding of Johannes Valentinus Andreae
Favorite poem is Dante’s divine comedy
Favorite anime is a tie between legend of the galactic heroes, revolutionary girl utena, monogatari, lain and yu yu hakusho(and a couple others)

I'm more of a type for manga, but of what anime I've seen I can't decide between City Hunter and Kekkai Sensen as my favorite. Maybe former, first season of KS had a problem with a pair of OCs that were a bit too Mary Sue-ish.
Favorite book is Fantômas.

There is some other anime that I can't really remember the name. That is about some guy making a dictionary, can't get more /lit/ than that. I can't really remember the name. But I can't really choose, there are too many options and it is a bit like the same with books. And I'm more of a manga person.
> Freud's Intro to Psychoanalysis, Shakespeare's Julius Caesar, Friedan's The Feminine Mystique, Mihaly's Flow.
Those are mainly what I got 'spinning' in my head atm. Not really favorites or anything.

Does anyone know of any books that are similar to Urusei Yatsura Movie 2: Beautiful Dreamer? Specifically, a surreal story that captures the melancholic mood of the film, with themes such as resistance to change and the fleeting nature of life and its moments. Right now, I am trying out Borges' short stories to see if they suit what I'm looking for but it would be cool if any anons have recs.

your point would be valid if it weren't for the fact that the 'aesthetic' of Lain encompasses such a broad spectrum as to be the primary communicator of substance. it is a series chiefly grounded on 'atmosphere', 'aesthetic' and half-suggested questions based on those - it accomplishes its goal with exactness. not liking Lain because it is 'not that deep' is a fundamental misunderstanding of its qualities, a misunderstanding which newfags such as your self desperately try to hold on to to exude an air of good taste

I really really like it but here’s the thing, while you can really enjoy it without understanding the references, the whole thing is one big Rosicrucian/occult allegory. Each of the rose-characters have their color scheme and personality literally designed off of a sephira, the anime is literally about the chemical marriage; the scope of the allegorical nature doesn’t become apparent until the final episode. But even stuff like the music in it will reference Swedenborg, Christian mysticism and world forth. It’s just absolutely subtle and not in your face with the occult allegory. You can find the entire dub on YouTube in a playlist, I’d recommend watching it all if the above interests you. Also the repetition/ritual of it becomes really comfy. But if you don’t like it I wouldn’t say force it.

Are there two versions of lain? I see gifs from time to time which were not in the one I saw, lile the gif of her eating a gun, they suggest a much darken anime free of that terrible happy ending, or are these gifs just fan art? I think it's the best modern comedy anime at the very least, season 2 is going to be pure kino.

I agree, i thought it was hilarious. There's a season 2 coming out?

And to be clear I mean we have no cule if it's even in the works, but I'm holding out hope for a post-COVID announcement. As I'm sure you know, the coof isn't making anime production any easier.

Didn't the Hinamatsuri manga end earlier this year? If they don't have enough source material they aren't going to be getting any more. Maybe they'll make a movie instead of a full season if that's the case.

>> No.17237568

>>17237550
It has almost completed but it isn't yet. Plus I think the lack of material was one of the reasons there wasn't a second season earlier on, and other thibgs like economic conditions due to the coof are more related now. I don't know to be fair, I couldn't say.

Unironically I really like this one and im not one for anime or fanservice. the actual fanservice shit actually worked thematically and it had an actual visceral but fun energy that felt raw and dramatic but also not afraid to cross that line into absurdity while also having some real gravitas to it.

There are unironic hebephiles on this site, who might like the show because of the little girls it depicts. There are also people who like science-fiction and technology in general and view the show as a particularly prescient depiction of certain possibilities it would allow for in the future (i.e the internet as an entrance into a virtual copy of physical reality). I personally saw it years ago and barely remember a lick of plot, but found the desaturated visuals and the melancholic atmosphere pretty cool, and the main character endearing in her own way. The opening theme in particular, is a favorite of mine within anime, even if the series as a whole isn't. I agree that the series does seem to have become used a signal of "sophisticated" taste in some circles, but it's distinct enough to justify the cult-fanbase it holds.

Though I haven't watched anime in many years, and probably shouldn't try to analyze it much anymore given my lack of background.

The character designs are probably the most unattractive of any anime, Lain herself looks like a beady-eyed toad. While the show does seem to attract a lot of computer nerds who want to self-insert as a late 90s hacker, I don't think it's a sexual kind of thing.
I think the rest of your explanation is more accurate. While the show's actual story is kind of a mess and the ending is a lame cop-out, the ideas behind it all are still very prescient. Konaka, the writer, was pretty knowledgeable about early hacker and internet culture and it shows. The problem, which some would-be deepfags treat like one of the show's strengths, is that the presentation is so incoherent that you can't really pick up on this unless you've seen it all twice. Texhnolyze has the same problem, but worse because they were working with a smaller budget.

What's anime you'd recommend as better than Lain? I intentionally watch little anime because I can tell I won't like it. I liked Lain because I was going into it expecting a theme of hyperreality and it delivered that nicely enough.

Well put.
There's a real autogynephillic energy around the fanbase though. Not sure what that's all about but if you go on /g/ or leftist circles (I don't) you know what I'm talking about. (>>/lit/thread/S14845873))
I liked this video about it though if anyone thinks the anime is just nonsense: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XIr6TPrqRds
