I know this might seem too lowbrow for you posh-galaxy-/lit/-brain-smart-beautiful people here, but whats the deal with this book? People link it to the Columbine shooters, shooter's manifestos, rioters and sociopaths, but I dont get it. It's a kid's book.

I feel like this board can give a more honest answer than say reddit

It will unironically be remembered for the rest of our civilisation as a children's classic. It greatly helped to form the memetic mind of the zoomer generation.

Can you imagine if Diary of a Wimpy Kid became progressively more mature with Greg becoming older in each installment? Perhaps even the handwriting and drawings could slowly improve, or we could see a section of time where his love for drawing fizzles out. Greg could have been the existential hero of a generation in this way.
Nonetheless DoaWK is a great children's book. Adults often forget just how clever kids are, and the fact that kids can enjoy the character that is Greg, and the world portrayed through his narcissistic point of view and unreliable narration, is proof of that.
Kids are curious creatures, and telling them what to think and how this is that and such, giving them the answers, only serves to snuff out their curiosity. I can recall a playground discussion where we decided that Greg must be lying about many events of the books. However, the question remained, a diary is not meant to be read by other people so who is he lying to? It might be possible that Greg is paranoid about other people invading his privacy and reading the diary, and portrays himself in a more impressive manner so he is not vulnerable to the people who invade his privacy. However, the only people that would reasonably do that are his friends and family, people who have been involved in many of the events and would know he is lying making it a useless gesture. Therefore, Greg must be telling lies to himself for some kind of comfort. Keep in mind, everyone involved in this discussion was an elementary schooler. I don't recall us having any kinds of discussions like that on Harry Potter, even though we all liked Harry Potter very much.

>Who is he lying to?
In the first book and a few subsequent ones he says explicitly that he's writing it for biographers and future audiences after he becomes famous.

It's just an entertaining children's series. I read them first when I was in third grade and I'm 22 years old now and I still read them when a new one comes out. The reason people jokingly associate it with shooters and sociopaths is because the character of Greg displays narcissism and sociopathic traits like a lack of empathy and other stuff. It's mostly a joke but I don't believe Jeff Kenney intended the book to be read that way. He's even said that Greg is based on himself, but the book is just shallow humor.

The main guy is a major douchebag, but of course redditors will run with it and say he's a 'sociopath'

sociopath? he's just an average socially awkward kid. then again all redditors are pampered and oversocialized.

I hardly remember jack shit from when I read the first few but one thing I do remember is that they were very centered on Greg's "everything that goes wrong is other people's fault" and narcissistic philosophy. I don't remember what I thought of it at the time, but as a kid I think you ultimately see Greg as the protagonist and even though you laugh at him for doing dumb shit you still side with him and you don't separate healthy thoughts from unhealthy thoughts consciously like you might as an adult. You want to emulate characters you like, and I can easily see it leading to bad habits in terms of thoughts and behaviors. Of course, I can't say any of this with much confidence because I was 7-9 years old at the time.

Great book. Swan song of pre-smartphone childhood. I don’t get why people try to say it has a negative influence since Greg’s illusions of grandeur and general assholery are the main comedy point of the series. He reminds me of Ralph from A Christmas Story.

The series is very comfy. I remember the first four being the best.

No happy ending that way.
>Greg becomes embittered shut-in, eventually goes on killing spree
>Greg becomes embittered shut-in, troons out, and meets his end at the end of a noose
>Greg becomes the Chad of his dreams and gets a hot wife, only for it to be revealed in the last few pages that it's actually some sort of coma/dying dream/mental break

The series is a classic, every american millennial/zoomer grew up reading it and autistic boomers somehow correlate this with school shootings and massacre, sort of like music and video games in the early 2000s.

that would be really interesting actually. Like a book for each grade level and the contents themes matures as he does. Would be cool to give someone one book every year. would have probably worked better in the age before the internet, but it would have been a great idea in 1990s or 2000s.

The current installment would have him transitioning to a woman. Greg of course is auto-gynephile and would remain a lesbian, becoming furious when straight cis women still don't want him.

They aren't good. But in reality none of them are "good" except maybe the first one. They are entertaining, though. And they only take an hour or two to read so if you've got the time then no reason not to read them unless you've got better stuff to do.

The last few that I remember reading kinda just keep meandering. They aren't bad but it's relatively formulaic. I read them still because they entertain me, and I'm a 22 year old with a literature degree so take that as you will

As an elementary school teacher, I despise these books with my heart and soul. Kids love them, but objective data shows that these books contribute nothing to kids' literacy development.

I had a kid who worked his way through the entire bibliography of these books without improving his vocabulary the tiniest bit. His reading comprehension remained awful cause it's all short jokes with no plot to follow.

As soon as I banned these books and all like it, their reading skill improved again.

I hate them.
