The experience of consciousness has nothing to do with determinism or free will. It has everything to do with awareness. You are actually free to the extent that things are under your purview, and you are not free to the extent that externals dictate your behavior and inner state. e.g. you are more free alone than in company, you are more free the stronger executive control you have over your impulses, etc

With a pure math degree you could find really good work doing non technical engineering, like QA work, though you'd probably have to get a little experience as a technician for a year or 2, though the same is true for an engineering student.
