Yeah, but I figure since I have this gift card it wouldn’t hurt to get the really nice box set.

What should I buy instead?

Dont buy a box set for a book you havent read and are probably not even going to finish

I had this urge a while ago and just read Swann's Way before biting the bullet. I really enjoyed it but I also don't feel like I need to read another 3700 pages of it. I'd say start with Swann's and see if you want to continue

Finally some thoughtful advice. Thank you! I think I’ll do that

the only reason to read this is for the quality of the prose, which is lost in translation. otherwise it's not worth the investment.

It is worth it. Age will not affect your enjoyment, it is a work that will grow with the reader.

The Moncrieff/Kilmartin translation is absolutely beautiful Even if you have read it in French it is absolutely worth reading this translation, they outdid Proust in some places.

honestly? Don't do it anon. I always rather read 3 300 pages books than 1 1000 pages book. plus you don't know if you'd like how is it translated or the prose of it. Just download the first one or go to a library and if you like it go ahead and buy the whole set.
100$ for a book is a huge waste of money inho.

I wouldn't really recommend it, at least not until you're older and have read more.

Do it.
Get the Everyman's edition linked above; it is a decent tradition and as other anons said the books are well made (proper binding, bookmark ribbon etc).
The book is like life; long and with some boring bits. But worthwhile on the whole. If you get (and keep) a decent edition then you can reread it, which is what the book really needs - it will seem like a new novel when you read it again in middle age.

Don't do this. Get the hardback version of the modern library edition. It is superior.

I'm currently reading it in French (La Prisonnière vol 5) it's really great, one of the best prose I have ever read.
I found it quite hard to get into for the two first volumes, lot of characters are introduced but the narrator doesn't interact with some of them until vol 3-4.
Choose an edition with good notes too.

hows the translation of that one?
