If you like the "hidden lore" then check out Iceberg Theory writers such as Hemingway and Carver. If you like bleak pessimism, McCarthy and Ligotti might be worth a look. I don't read much horror but I imagine there's a lot of horror novelists who write DS-esq novels.

I just wanted to say that I had an epiphany today, Murakami is to literature what the Yakuza series is to vidya. The games and his works are all pretty same-y, so whether or not you enjoy them depends on if that overrides your experience of them or you find the earnest nature of the works and the small details that separate them endearing.

something about the flow, the spawn points moved perfectly to make everything a complete shitshow but without neverending bottlenecks. i always played on max servers so it was just a haze of grenade spam and spawnkilling. i only played k98 default (not sniper) because i was a little tryhard.

fuck this brings back memories i wasn't expecting to have even retained. i remember playing chateau, and brecourt. i remember playing the CS1.6 knockoff gameplay mode on depot and harbor. i remember hating playing stalingrad, because it encouraged shitty players to camp, but it made it fun to clear them out of the opposing houses. i just barely remember rocket, and how it was one-sided (or something?) because it was a shooting gallery for one team in the initial 30 seconds?

crazy, i remember the exact feeling of all of them, not just thinking about them but being there. i wish i understood this feeling, i never get why nostalgia feels like it's always just out of reach. maybe for other people it isn't, but for me it's like it's just close enough to be tantalizing but too far to actually hold onto, and the more you try to hold the more it slips away.

similar memories with DOD, which nobody remembers or reminisces about. just felt a feeling i haven't felt since i was probably 14, the feeling of getting too far into the axis spawn and knowing you were going to die eventually but could bushwhack them for at least one spawn cycle.

YU-NO

>> No.17129025

>>17128545
I've heard it's very different, but i'll probably read it eventually. The game was very good at transporting you and making you feel as a part of the zone, the swamps, the howling and the distant echoes of screams together with the eminent buzzing of anomalies at first unsettle you, but eventually become sort of comforting in their own way. The contrast between the areas reclaimed by nature and the zone's very own ecosystem and those man made relicts long abandoned, such as the underground laboratories and the old soviet style buildings, the solitude and danger looming around every corner contrasted with the relative safety and warmth of a friendly campfire with that old tingling string guitar playing, it all ties into this strangely beautiful, yet dangerous world that leaves it's mark on you.

I was so disappointed when gherman chopped my head off and the credits started rolling. I was like really, that's it? I'm guessing this is one of those games that you have to replay over and over again to truly "get it".

Thanks for posting this. Never played this game, probably never will but the cover art astounded me so much I looked it up and learned from wikipedia it was influenced by an Italian artist, Giorgio de Chirico. These are exactly the kind of landscapes I adore, dark, empty, ancient, beautifuel. So thanks for helping me unintentionally I love stuff like this!

No problem, for what it’s worth if you ever get the chance to play it do so (if you are a fan of video games) it is a puzzle thriller game with a simplistic minimalist story and a gorgeous setting. The graphics are a bit dated but if that doesn’t bother you you’ll have a blast. Enjoy your art (I recommend an artist named Vladmir Kush)

>> No.17136512

I think threads like this don't work very well because everyone is trying to find literary (in the sense of 'proper literature') equivalents to these games, and for most of them there really aren't any. If there's anything similar out there, they're going to be sci-fi, fantasy, or other genre works. But this board is too scared of looking dumb to read or recommend anything like that.

Benson, Ambrose Bierce, Algernon Blackwood, Arthur Machen, August Derleth, Frank Belknap Long, and so on *sniffs* and for more modern stuff, look for Bruno Shulz, Jean Ray, Hanns Heinz Ewers, T. E. D. Klein, Robert Aickman, Ray Campbell, Daphne du Maurier, Charles Beaumont, Richard Matheson, Laird Barron, John Langan, Thomas Ligotti, Jon Padgett, Jeff Vandermeer, etc.
