Hey /lit/, I'm looking for a great stand alone fantasy books.

Something like Elder Scrolls game serieis with swords/armor, hero..dungeons, forests and monsters etc. or a good post apocalyptic fantasy book that also has monsters in it, a hero with a gun or something along the lines of Half Life series.

I am also open too multivolume series if it meets this criteria and is EPIC.

I would also like a recommendation for a novel similar to the Elder Scrolls series.

What always pulled me into the games was how the world seemed to be a living, changing entity (despite the fact that the game environments are static as fuck). I'm not just talking about the fact that each significant NPC had a unique personality, or how each region of the games had their own history. There was also the deeply elaborate and intriguing religious and governmental bureaucracies and histories that the player could read about and explore.

So yeah - despite the fact that one could consider something like Morrowind to be a literary experience in-and-of-itself (especially the 38 Sermons, Jesus Christ Bethesda's writers used to be epic!) I would really like a legit book of a similar caliber.

If you could give a list of some of the things you have already read.....

Well, I recommend Magician, by Raymond E. Feist. Read that, and the two next ones that comprise the Riftwar Saga, stopping after that will be a fix enough for you I think (the rest aren't so necessary IMO)

Narnia Series.

I should mention that this book has it all:
Castles and sieges, fights, portals to other worlds, elves, mages, dragons, etc., etc.

It's good enough. Move onto A song of ice and fire after you read it.

>EPIC!
>swords and dungeons
>morrowind is literary

it's like I'm 16 years old again

I don't condone this type of shit but I'll give you some fantasy I used to read and like:

The Dark Elf Trilogy by R. A. Salvatore:
>dark elf from d&d lives in a literal underworld with mafia shit like the godfather, he journeys to the surface to become a good boy and help people

Dragonworld by Byron Preiss and some other fucks
>classic fantasy, written in the 70s. boy must save the world with dragons etc.

Too Many Curses by A. Lee Martinez
>a furry kobold named [i forgot] is servant to a crazy old wizard in his maze-castle, she must save the castle from demons

Shadowfall by James Clemens
>steampunk series about alchemy and mortal gods, part of the magic system involves feces of said gods

Rumo & His Miraculous Adventures by Walter Moers
>crazy land of zamonia where there are no humans, a doglike "wolperting" (books is originally german) orphan sets out to discover the world and fine true love

Heroics for Beginners by John Moore
>hilarious satire of fantasy cliches

The Physiognomy by Jeffrey Ford
>Five Star Physiognomist Dr. Clay lives in a semi-dystopian future where a person's physiognomy determines their social status, he rebels against the system when he realizes the system is bullshit and has crazy hallucinations from drug use

Monstrous Regiment by Terry Pratchett
>comic fantasy involving a reverse trap who joins the army for money, fights nearby vampires and trolls, war atrocities ensue

>>1711852
>fines true love

is he a tax collector? what an asshole, no wonder revenue officers are forever alone

The magician series is epic. The shadowfall books are okay but there are only two of them. I like the dark elf books but I suggest reading most if not all of them so that you can really get the big picture
