“What? What was happening? Just the day previous, it seemed, he had gloated over these selfsame acts, abused himself while wallowing in their miscreant memory, laughed at the horror of his blackened seed … exulted.
And now? Now?
Now he sat upon the throne of a far mightier father …
And the madness of the Meat was lifting.
He slumped from the seat to his knees. A great fist clenched within his breast, yanking his every tendon, every ligament, from the muck of his flesh. He rocked to and fro, keening, spit whistling from his teeth, air pinching his gums. A God seized the nape of his neck, thrust him forward. He convulsed about spittle, choked on threads of burning mucous. Obscenities wheeled, glimpses through smoke. Taking. Touching. Tasting …
“No!” he croaked, his expression alive and jerking, as if hooked by strings to battling birds.
“Noooo!”
Yes.

How do you guys feel about Ender’s Game? I don’t really read science fiction but I thought it was amazing; no over-the-top world building, no cringe protagonist, no love triangle, no cartoonish villains. I really liked the characters and the story, and honestly I think it’s one of the best fiction books I’ve read. Plus the main antagonists are literally bugmen

I honestly think that you should start with the The Book of the New Sun.
Wolfe writes really good prose and you'll be plunged into a completely new sort of set that mixes fantasy and sci-fi.

Or you can delve into Bakker, which is a special kind of schizo fantasy. Not for everyone but, but it's solid type of fantasy, that's for sure.

I don't think there's an official answer. Some have said yes. Others think it's around Greece (there was a historical Thrace, and a river god named Nessus). There was a woman on the mailing list who did some research on it.
I initially thought it was South America from the yerba mate, pampas grass, the obvious Incan reference to Apu Punchau, but idk.

>This author has a phallic fascination that would shame a porn star. If something even bears the slightest resemblance to a penis, he makes the reader aware of it. Also any and all female characters in this series are wildly over-sexed, viciously raped (multiple times for some of them), and traded like cattle without exception. It's like a crazed-libido fourteen year-old boy screaming jokes about boobies and penises. It becomes tiring even before we get a chance to become invested in the story. Aside from the sex, Bakker attempts to follow in the footsteps of Erikson in terms of pessimism and grit and fails miserably. Where these things came so effortlessly with Erikson, with Bakker they feel far too affected to have any impact.
>Two recommendations:
>1) If you're looking for a gritty, dark fantasy read pick up Abercrombie's 'The Blade Itself'.
>2) If you're Mr. Bakker, see a psychiatrist.

>HOWEVER, this was the worst misogynistic drivel I have ever come across as an adult reader. Granted, I know there's worse crap out there, but my friends and tailored Goodreads recommendations are, for the most part, smart enough not to recommend that to me. There was a serious dearth of female characters, and when we did encounter one, she was either a prostitute or a slave, WITH NO EXCEPTION. The depictions of the prostitute especially made me see red. Perhaps, to an idiotic male audience, the sad but erotic tale of the aging hooker's life would seem deep and profound. But to me, it made me want to punch Bakker in the throat. I mean, if you want to, read it yourself and then I'll go ahead and give you my more in depth rant about it, but I'll leave it at "they're all slaves or prostitutes, and it was degrading, offensive, and sick."
>More on misogyny: Bakker doesn't know any synonyms for "bad" (or more than one adjective at all, for that matter), but he evidently read The Patriarchy's Thesaurus because his only fucking word to describe something distasteful is "WOMANISH." HE USES IT ALL THE TIME, THROUGHOUT THE WHOLE BOOK. Go fuck yourself, Bakker, and go find a new fucking word. I'm out. You can keep your prostitutes who like rape and your women who accept being owned and the insane concubines who think they're the Virgin Mary, because I will not be reading book two to find out what happens to them all.
>Oh, and in case it wasn't clear - I understand that the denotation of "womanish" can mean "weakly feminine," and that "weakly" is, without argument, bad. Which is the whole god damn reason I'm pissed about his word choice. Women aren't WEAK. It's not an INSULT to be LIKE A WOMAN. Leave the "weak woman" insults out of this century, please. Stop calling men womanly and claiming that's an insult.

Good reads is filled with these gems. I swear that Bakker has to be the biggest normie filter in the genre. He Abdicated a career of success just to fuck with people.

>There are problems with this set-up. In particular, there are problems with the evolution of the ACME General-Purpose Space Opera Universe™ from "Singularity Sky" into "Iron Sunrise". SS was quirky but not brilliantly plotted — a lot of crap ended up on the cutting room floor (equal to 140% of the final word count of the finished novel). IS was a more conventionally-plotted novel ... but I made a huge blunder in introducing the ReMastered and their Unborn God. By implication the UB is another Eschaton-level GCV-based AI. It's locked in conflict with the Eschaton, attempting to edit history into a shape in which it, rather than the Eschaton, is the dominant entity. The events of IS are set in the foreground of such a war between time-travellers, and I think I got some of the details badly wrong — at the level of how the events would appear from within.
Charlie Stross literally came up with the Ultimate Intelligences from Hyperion but with more physics-breaking technobabble that he apparently thought was correct physics, this in a novel that was already using quantum entanglement for FTL communication and as such was already all manners of fucked up physics wise, decades after Fall of Hyperion had already come out and dropped the entire series because he wasn't happy with the additional technobabble required for that to make sense. Why are all "hard sci fi" writers always so incredibly arbitrary about what "hard sci fi" consists of?

I've read the BotNS, but it felt more like fantasy than sci-fi.

I'm not looking for anything bizzaro-world, but certainly not the Martian either.

Something with multiple sentient alien species who are both allies and antagonistic would be nice.

I simply have no know-how about the genre so I don't know in which direction to look.

Sci-fi fans are a lot more anal about their sub-genres and have holy wars over whether something correctly fits this niche or that niche. It makes recommending anything a huge pain in the ass. Especially since there's comparatively few sci-fi fans in /sffg/ so the chances of any two opinions lining up on anything s practically nil.

just finished "the poppy war".

it starts as a pretty crappy YA novel then it morphs into decent grimdark fantasy. about 1/3 of the way through. everything seems to go from fanfic-level to the kind of competent but nonexciting writing you might expect from modern prestige television. it carries itself.

some might describe it as an allegory but it's quite literally The Second Sino-Japanese war transplanted into an imaginary world and given a fantasy facelift. horrible acts of violence are depicted and if you have a preteen's knowledge of 20th century history and have read the wikipedia article on the rape of nanking you are NOT in for a surprise.

For years, he had grappled the great beast that was the Three Seas, pinned it to earth, and with gifts and brutalities he had trained it, until his name only need be uttered—until his tyranny had become indistinguishable from his being. This allowed him to move from nations to truths, to turn his intellect full upon the maddening abstracta of the Daimos, the Metagnosis, and the Thousandfold Thought.
He had pierced the obscurantist veils, grasped the metaphysics of Creation, transformed meaning into miracles. He had walked the ways of Hell, returned bedecked in trophies. No one, not even the legendary Hero-Mage of ancient Ûmerau, Titirga, could rival his arcane might.
He had learned of the head on the pole.
Domination. Over lives and nations. Over history and ignorance. Over existence itself, down through the leaves of reality’s countless skins. No mortal had possessed such might. His was a power and potency that not even the Gods, who must ration themselves across all times, could hope to counter, short of scooping themselves hollow and forever dwelling as phantoms …
No soul had so owned Circumstance. He, and he alone, was the Place, the point of maximal convergence. “Nations hung from his whim. Reality grovelled before his song. The Outside itself railed against him.
And yet for all of it darkness still encircled him, the obscurity of before, the blackness of after.
For those who worshipped him as a god, he remained a mortal man, possessing but one intellect and two hands—great, perhaps, in proportion to his innumerable slaves, but scarcely a mote on the surface of something inconceivable. He was no more a prophet than an architect or any other who wrenches his conception into labourious reality. All the futures he had raised had been the issue of his toil …
He suffered visions, certainly, but he had long ceased to trust them.

Two things stand out to me in this. One is the guy who isn't comfortable being polyamorous. The woman treats it as something that he will eventually give in to. We'll wait until you're comfortable, but you will accept it. We can do anything we want, but if you don't like any of it we're going to make you like it. Later is the character that doesn't have a label for his sexuality, and the other character tells him he needs one. Why? I guess everyone needs their pronouns and oppression labels, right? Also he uses "y'all" near the beginning. I'm from the south and this makes me cringe whenever I hear some leftist say it.

I highly recommend this to anyone here.

Basically, aliens (insectoids) on a space voyage suffer a malfunction and end up crashin near a XIV century german little town with little hopes of ever returning home.

They are forced to interact with the humans and try to solve their problems at the same time the black plague is ravaging Europe and slowly approaching the town.

Its fucking genius and wholesome.
