Also, I don't recall any mention of the Equator or the tropics in the book. And there's an extra layer of obfuscation since Urth is not supposed to be our Earth, but one from a different universe (or another iteration of). Kinda like Ushas is not Urth.

Granted, I know there's worse crap out there, but my friends and tailored Goodreads recommendations are, for the most part, smart enough not to recommend that to me. There was a serious dearth of female characters, and when we did encounter one, she was either a prostitute or a slave, WITH NO EXCEPTION. The depictions of the prostitute especially made me see red. Perhaps, to an idiotic male audience, the sad but erotic tale of the aging hooker's life would seem deep and profound. But to me, it made me want to punch Bakker in the throat. I mean, if you want to, read it yourself and then I'll go ahead and give you my more in depth rant about it, but I'll leave it at "they're all slaves or prostitutes, and it was degrading, offensive, and sick."

One of the main plot points is how fey creatures exist, but only few people know and can actually see or interact with them. likewise, the book tries to be subtle about them. just finished "the poppy war".

it starts as a pretty crappy YA novel then it morphs into decent grimdark fantasy. about 1/3 of the way through. everything seems to go from fanfic-level to the kind of competent but nonexciting writing you might expect from modern prestige television. it carries itself.

some might describe it as an allegory but it's quite literally The Second Sino-Japanese war transplanted into an imaginary world and given a fantasy facelift. horrible acts of violence are depicted and if you have a preteen's knowledge of 20th century history and have read the wikipedia article on the rape of nanking you are NOT in for a surprise.

Two things stand out to me in this. One is the guy who isn't comfortable being polyamorous. The woman treats it as something that he will eventually give in to. We'll wait until you're comfortable, but you will accept it. We can do anything we want, but if you don't like any of it we're going to make you like it. Later is the character that doesn't have a label for his sexuality, and the other character tells him he needs one. Why? I guess everyone needs their pronouns and oppression labels, right? Also he uses "y'all" near the beginning. I'm from the south and this makes me cringe whenever I hear some leftist say it.
