Hell's Gate, Multiverse #1 - David Weber & Linda Evans

It increasingly seems to me that page count and content are inversely correlated. The longer something is the less that of anything that happens relative to its page count. Fortunately, I didn't mind that much for this book, despite it being nearly 1,000 pages. While I would've preferred it to be significantly shorter, it's fine as it is. Most of the pages are concerned with worldbuilding, so if that isn't something you're okay with, it's may be an enjoyable read for you. It's somewhat ironic that so much is spent on worldbuilding, because they're literally on alternate Earths. Their civilizations and locations are roughly analogous to ours as well, so I would certainly expect some people to be angry about that. The first 100 pages or so are almost entirely exploration and mapping of an alternate Earth, which was nice.
If you are looking for war, as shown by the cover, then you're going to be disappointed because there's very little actual combat in this book. I assume the second and third books will have much more. For now it's almost entirely about preparation, in terms of logistics, domestic politics, and diplomacy.
This is military science fantasy with two civilizations. One has psionics and roughly early 1900s tech and and other has magic and magitech. The latter's mechanical tech is medieval but their magitech is 2000s, which makes for a rather incongruent technological development from our perspective.
The premise is that a portal appears that leads to an alternate Earth, they call each one a universe, and mostly each one only has an entrance and exit portal, leading to a linear chain of Earths. I really enjoy this concept. The distance from one civilization to the other is roughly 100,000 miles, going through dozens of Earths, which really complicates their logistics.
There's a lot that this book does that I enjoy in terms of substance, but it does a lot that I disagree with in style/aesthetics. My main problem is how dumb the opposing side is, to the point where the opposing side explicitly states that it's unbelievable how dumb they are. Another problem is how much some of the characters dramatically overreact to anything happening. An example, of which many could be provided, is that genocide is literally stated to be an option, by which I mean literally using the word, in response to a few casualties. When one character sees basic magic for the first time, they basically have a seizure, feel sick, and scream about how it's unnatural.
This was a surprise for me, as I haven't been interested in anything from Weber previously, but it was recommended to me in the thread a long while ago and the sole rating for it in the group is a 5 star, so I thought I'd give it a try. I'm glad I did. Apparently this also the only novel originally published by Baen that I've ever finished, as far as I can tell with a quick look anyway. I'll read the sequels, eventually.

Rating: 4/5

>Rhythm of War is spending its third week on the New York Times bestseller list as of this writing, and has spent all three of those weeks as the #1 most read book in the country, per Amazon’s charts. So…huzzah! Thank you so much. 2020 might have been a trash year, but I hope this helped end it on a better note for many of you.
>The book did about 40% better in sales than the previous volume, which is amazing. Thank you all for your support. This series is still in active progress, and I’ll dive into Book Five (the final book of the first sequence) in 2022, for a 2023 release. (Which is when we’ll probably do the Kickstarter for Words of Radiance in leatherbound.)

So most of you are so brain addled that the literal least "brainless anime action setpiece" book of the entire series so far, the literal capstone of every disparate thread being brought together by the overarching metaphysics of cosmere magic, is just "filler" because..? You didn't like it? You think scientific research is boring? You're literally too dim to understand the mechanics of undermining an occupying invasion of the seat of your military power? Dalinar was learning to use his powers instead of leading in the umpteenth battle scene of the series? Kaladin is still Sad and Shallan is still Crazy?
Seriously, explain why RoW is bad without resorting to subjective opinions about things you don't enjoy. How was /sffg/ filtered so hard?

Rhythm of War was just underwhelming for me. I had to force myself to keep reading it because I kept getting distracted since it never hooked me.

I felt like the whole book was building up for each characters revelations, but the only one that had any payoff was Kaladin.

Dalanar did almost nothing the whole book and barely leaned anything of his powers.

Shalan had more of her cringy personality dramas. But every shallow chapter was basically the same thing, i.e. veil and radiant trying to make shallow grow, shallan tries but ends up hiding again. Over and over its the same thing until the end where she just decides not to kill the herald and everything is all better. There's no real growth shown at all the whole time and there's no real buildup for the climax of her revelation, it just kind of happens and leaves it at that.

It was nice to get some more character development in navani, but it was really not that interesting to me. Its just her magically making discoveries and the fused praising her to a sickening extent because muh girl power. When she bonded the tower spren it was pretty anticlimactic and forced because of plot. There was no reason to waste so many chapters on her when, like shallan, was flushed out the first 3-4 of their chapters. the only real thing we gleamed from her chapters was that galvanar was not the man we thought he was.

Its really the weakest book so far imo. No big plot reveals about what happened in the past, no real progression in the war, character development that could have been finished by the first half of the book.

All of the plot advancing happened in the last chapter and now we have to wait 2 years for the next book, when it could have just been the second half of the book.

Thats also why her climax was so underwhelming. The whole time she's getting girl pep talk from Rabonel and then ends up helping the enemy multiple times, but somehow still earns enough trust from the sibling to bond. He's slowly getting entangled into massive info dumps and the Cosmere story-line.
The Navani Arc is just an example. I laughed out loud at how fucking ridiculous (and out right immersion breaking) Navani's interactions with Raboniel were. He's not simply making me hate some characters, he's writing them so badly that it's 4th wall breaking type shit.

What's more infuriating is the amount of wasted chapters. Instead establishing a proper plot for the Cosmere characters, he wastes half the book going through the same mental problems that we've already seen from Kaladin and Shallan from the previous 3 books.

It's rather ironic that the immortal words say "Journey before destination" when his books are quite literally "Destination before Journey". Because nothing happens until the end of each book.

It might have been a slog at times, but it still had the goal of flushing out characters and their backstories, but RoW just really had no point to it.

Kaladins story was fine, even if drawn out. At least there were marked events to signify his progression, whereas shallan and navani was literally the same chapter over and over.

>I felt like the whole book was building up for each characters revelations, but the only one that had any payoff was Kaladin.
And Rlain, finally, got some movement in his story. Navani progressed, literally discovering a mechanism for finally ending the war and becoming radiant. Even Renarin got some plot love, despite being clearly reserved for the back 5 in his real importance to the story. Dabbid, Venli, Kaladin's parents, Leshwi. There was a ton of minor character work that I felt really helped humanize the war on a personal level, for both sides of the conflict. I get it's not a setpiece heavy battle novel, but I enjoyed the change of pace.
>Dalinar barely did anything
Fair point, this one really was just a set-up book for him, since clearly his Bondsmith powers will be integral to the finale battle with Odium.
>Shallan retreads
That's fair too. I know most people detest Shallan on principle, but I've never had that problem. She acts like an airhead teenage girl because she is an airhead teenage girl. Her plot, like many of the characters in this book, was really more of an inroads for establishing and expanding cosmere lore and I also have zero problem with that. It's also why I had no issues with Navani's arc. 90% of why I read Sanderson is top tier worldbuilding.
>It's really the weakest book so far
Certainly in some respects, but being a plot heavy scaffolding book for the Big Fight in book 5 doesn't make it as terrible as some of these other whinging faggots make it out to be. I think its just because I was so excited for this book (as I have been with all the stormlight archive books) that this massive feeling of being underwhelmed really leaves a bad taste in my mouth. The minor character work was fine, but the main character developments was just so drawn out without any ingenuity. I mean Shallan makes me cringe, but I don't hate the character and she can have some witty responses from time to time, but every chapter of hers was just so stale and lacking imagination. Even her hunt for the traitor was so lacking inspiration. And of course the climax was hardly a climax. It just felt like she changed her mind on a whim and Sanderson closed that plot thread.

Rain got some movement, but felt like he was basically forgotten halfway through when he became Venus servant, then its like at the end when things were wrapping up Sanderson finally remembered the guy and just threw him in some scenes.

Basically everything could have wrapped up as the first half of the book, and the second half could've been book 5.

I can see how some people would want kaladin to just get over it and move on, but I think its fair how his depression is handled. And at least you really get the feeling he worked for his ephiphany/resolution unlike everyone else where it just kind of landed on their laps because Sanderson needed to move the plot along. The only parts that got me excited was were kaladin was basically beaten down mentally and physically, but still stood up again and again despite it all. Makes me really root for kaladin even though I just kept thinking "hurry up and say the words dammit!"

I don't know why Sando seems obsessed with playing character therapist, but it's unlikeable. We get it; Shallan is mentally broken and that manifests through her frivolous lightweaving. Kaladin is clearly broken, you spent 2 good books illustrating that. We get it. The bonding with spren should at least start to change this rumination.
If we don't get new characters then things that have been clearly set up need move forward plot-wise. The anime filler arc is annoying.

I was also not the biggest fan of Kal in RoW, which was disappointing. I feel like so many characters just stalled in Oathbringer.

>Nonmanposting to clear out the sandershits
Several hours passed before they rounded the final bend and saw it before them. The fissured wall climbed high, straining the neck with its gouged dimensions. It loomed as only natural works could loom. The random line of fracture and millennial erosion, of rock sculpted in mystery and accident. Black outcroppings with mossed bellies. Long cracks dangling anemic weeds. And set in its heart, like some shrine to intellect and intention, the enormous Obsidian Gate, looming over the ruins of an ancient fortress.
The company gathered on the platform beneath it, loose clots of men drifting to a halt, mouths open. The Skin Eaters had expected many things, daydreams of a storied destination, but they were quite unprepared for what they beheld. Achamian could see it in the way they craned and peered, like emissaries of a backward yet imperious people trying to see past their awe. The entrance was unbarred, an ovoid of impenetrable black set in an immense arched recess, which was panelled with reliefs that formed a skein over yet deeper narratives, so that the scenes depicted possessed a startling depth. Nonmen figures twined across every surface, weathered to the point where you could scarcely distinguish the armoured from the naked, frozen in antique postures of triumph or ceremonial tedium. Shepherds with lambs about their shoulders. Warriors fending lions and jackals. Captives baring necks to the swords of princes. On and on, the lives of the dead in miniature. Four pillars flanked the threshold, the outermost pair soaring tall as netia pine, yet hollow, great cylinders of interlocking figures and faces; the innermost solid, three snakes intercoiling, their heads lost in the vaulted gloom, their rattled tails forming three-pronged bases.
Curses filled the silence, some murmured, others spoken quite out loud. Such was the monumental delicacy, the profusion of figure and detail, that the forms seemed more revealed than rendered, as though the sheeted cliffs were naught but mud rinsed from the stone of ossified souls. Even half-ruined, there was too much, too much beauty, too much detail, and certainly too much toil, a grandeur made wicked by the demands it exacted on simpler souls. It was a place that begged to be challenged, overthrown.

I have to believe someone else read this because I only found it lurking here. I'm almost gave up on it about 2/3's in during the umpteenth meta-story that reads like a horrible nightmare because it's actually a horrible nightmare. Written by a pedophile And I'm all for edgy things in fantasy fiction, especially if you're intentionally leaning horror, but between that and the afterword I'm have to wonder if the author is maybe trying to admit something? It was a weird book overall, but the nature and creature bits were enjoyable. Wouldn't recommend to anyone but you fuckers.

If you were not satisfied by the time Severian describes the kind of sand the artists use, by the subtle world building that evokes perfectly well the wonder of how every tiny thing described has thousands of years behind it, it's probably not for you.

I read it last year I think. It was a slog until the chapter where severian just walks and talks with the librarian. I don't remember anything standing out but something clicked and from then on I found the story enjoyable. It takes some time to get used to the writing style but the more you read the easier it gets. The story as a whole is really just severian wandering around doing random shit. It's really beautifully written with some amazing scenes though. Like how when you read black company for the first time the short, stilted style is really jarring until you get into the rhythm. Same thing with Wolfe style
