Academia up to the late 19th century was an association of scholars first. While many negative things can be said about the atmosphere created by such associations, it was made of legitimately intelligent people. The college midwits represented a smaller proportion then.
The considerable increase in popularity of academia since then (and its transformation into highschool 2.0) is the root cause of those changes.
