That was a very sad interview for many reasons. I choose to remember his as an ardent defender of the canon and lover of literature. No one will ever be able to fit his shoesor any of his other clothes.

I enjoy Bloom for his preservation of the canon, but he's still a gnostic jew.

His personal views aside, he has done more for the preservation of literature than I ever will, so I'm thankful for that. I was too brash.

I think Bloom will be remembered for "Anxiety" and also for his own anxiety. He overestimated the effects of multicultural wokeness and genuinely believed the English department was being assailed by pernicious, inculcating forces. In reality the English department's population has been in decline for the last century as technology increasingly dominates the academy. Just think about that. For bloom's entire career, his field was shrinking. Natural he would attribute this to bad actors and an erosion of aesthetic feeling, as this cements his own erstwhile status as a literati. He ignored the historical trend because for bloom, great literature existed in a quasi-timeless realm. I'm not convinced by his gnosticism or prescriptivism, though I do like his theory of writers' lineal inheritance. All of his rabidest fanboys are insufferable undergrads.

That's the first time I've seen a positive perception how how things are now on this board. I sincerely hope you are right.

Peterson said young men flee the humanities. what's the truth here?

It's probably true. My english department was 60% female. My english grad program was 72% female. As always, women invade a space and lower the standards and ruin everything with their disrespect of the tradition. I'm only being partly sincere, so don't take me so seriously. I do think that by not intensely studying the canonical authors, as we used to, we are losing touch with truly sublime literature. I do think that women and minorities are partly to blame. (I myself am a racial minority.) But I also think technology is overwhelmingly to blame. To your point, men go where the money is, as they always have.

I remember my undergraduate courses where 95% female and all of them teenagers. Also they had to be dumbed down for the masses of students failing the course. People looked at me queer for confessing my love for literature and my taking it seriously. Women and retards lack the ability to be appreciate the study of high culture.
