Can a non Christian enjoy this book? What if i just want the story of man that turned away from hedonism and towards virtue.

>> No.17061283

Augustine will give you that story. By the end of the book it becomes a treatise on the philosophy of time, not vanilla Jesus worship.

yes it's a beautiful book. I am not sure about Christianity myself, sometimes it seems like Jesus might have been God and other times I think he was just a man.

>> No.17061301

It's worth it to read about his mother.

>towards virtue
since when do non-Christians care about Christian virtues? Serious question.

What I'm trying to imply is that you may be closer to faith than you think.

>> No.17061324

I read the book in college. That was years ago, but my impression then was excellent.

Yes, absolutely. You should at the least however understand the striving towards the idea of a God, and not call that a "falsity" or "mistake" anymore, even if you don't believe in a God.

It's complicated. I believe in the kingdom of god thats all i can say.

The whole thing is a case for conversion which offers some conversion guidelines

He might be thinking about Platonic or Aristotelian virtue.

what did that anon say was a christian virtue? turning asway from hedonism? is that exclusively a christian virtue? did no one before christianity value avoiding hedonism?

>> No.17061380

>>17061361
he literally said
>turned away from hedonism and towards virtue
>TOWARDS VIRTUE
If you believe St. Augustine's conversion was VIRTUOUS, then you put value in CHRISTIAN VIRTUES. You massive fucking idiot

>> No.17061381

>>17061361
The person your replying to did not say that avoiding hedonism is a Christian-only virtue. I think his point is that it's surprising that someone would want to read a Christian account of such a thing.

the book is a spiritual masterpeice, it has the earliest seeds of phycho analytic introspection and existential reflection in history. it is the spirit of the book that is compelling, his honesty and sincerity are so compelling you can only follow him, his philosophical jorney is much like ours, being clouded by materialism and unable to escape, being forced by something more than reason to climb above this plateu, a love of truth, and a love of much less worthy of love than truth force him to cry for help, and help there is.

>> No.17061469

it's a great book but he's the typical shit-eater catholic who fucks his maidservant while writing his ode to god

>> No.17061494

Just bought an italian edition for some 4 euros

I keep seeing Augustine being cited in other people's book, really excited to read it

there are thousand milions of virtues, just because you weren't taught any set of values at home and fall for the first one you come across, doesn't mean everyone has kike on a stick as their idee fixe

>> No.17062024

It's a wonderful text
It's a fun narrative, it can get very emotional regardless of confession or lack there of and has plenty of interesting philosophical ideas
Definitely one of the best if not the best autobiography ever written and it only covers the guy's youth and to an extent middle age
