The only talk was about how best to keep businesses open. The blinding effect of ideology made it impossible for the country to effectively deal with the pandemic.

An accepted wide spread belief.

You can believe voting in the US will do something. You can believe not voting will do something. Despite different tactics, both believe interacting with the voting process will achieve something.

The non ideological option is not thinking about the voting process at all. Your actions aren't based on a belief that the voting process is an arena at all.

Ideology in the Zizekian sense, as described here, just sounds like spooks. Ideas that control you instead of you controlling ideas. Letting the abstract determine how you concretely act. Am I correct?

I remember something I read in that Capitalist Realism book, so a second hand quote, that Zizek talked about how the ideology of capitalism allows the abstract to be one thing (e.g. money isn’t everything) in your mind, while acting in the total opposite (money being the central goal of people’s lives) in everyday action.
So just from that I wouldn’t say that the abstract controls the concrete in his conception of it, but the abstract excuses the concrete.
I welcome anyone to correct me but that is what I recall.
