General advice would be to try and combine it with lots of listening from an early stage. Noun genders can be tough to learn, more so than in other languages because the word itself really gives nothing away about what gender it may have, and this is what I see people who learn German struggle with, even when they've got the grammar down for the most part. Listening and developing a feel is going to get you further than studying these by rote, I think.

English does actually do this sometimes, although these days it comes across as deliberately poetic or archaicising. You can say "My eye the thing did scan" and it will still make sense to most literate English speakers that "the thing" is the object of the verb "did scan," and "my eye" is the subject. The more you know about grammar and the more experience you have with other languages, the easier it becomes to understand uncommon English grammar as well, and the more flexible you can be with it.
