I have a PUZZLE for monolonguals (EOLs, English as the only language). Europeans pls don't spoil it.
Here it is:
In my language there is a word that I will denote by A, which translated into english means "Jack", B which translated means "loves" and C which means "Jill".
The sentence A B C unsurprisingly means "Jack loves Jill".
However, if we reverse A and C we get C B A, also a grammatically correct sentence, and if we translate it into English it also means "Jack loves Jill", and not "Jill loves Jack" like you would expect. What's going on here? How is this possible?

ESLs feel superior to americucks but they would literally be monolingual themselves if their language was the lingua franca and they lived in a massive swath of linguistic homogeneity, they only learn English and other foreign languages because everything relevant is in English and three decades ago their neighbor was raping their daughters and trying to murder them. The idea that they actually had to spend any effort to learn English is retarded, even the dumbest piece of shit in Sweden speaks English for example. It's easy to pick up when all the media and international CONSOOMER shit caters to English.

But it is pretty cringe that so many Americans don't understand the value of learning more than one language, especially on a literature board. Don't be too hard on us though, our schools and universities are literally filled with faggots like pic related. We never even had a chance lol

that is like asking why bother to read literature or learn anything in the first place. learning a second language will pop your cherry in a million different ways. once you internalize what it really means for an entire culture of people to understand something from a completely different point of view down to their internal monologues, you gain something that can't be had any other way. plus, simply by seriously studying a foreign language, you become a better writer and speaker in your native language.

Unfortunately I have never learned German as a foreign speaker.
General advice would be to try and combine it with lots of listening from an early stage. Noun genders can be tough to learn, more so than in other languages because the word itself really gives nothing away about what gender it may have, and this is what I see people who learn German struggle with, even when they've got the grammar down for the most part. Listening and developing a feel is going to get you further than studying these by rote, I think.

I have an utterly brilliant idea for a short story collection. Imagine that the French Revolution, Louis XVII, son of the beheaded king, was taken to New Orleans, and the territory of Louisana became a "French America", independent from the Republic with its own constitutional monarchy. The novel would take place in the modern day, with slices of lives from all sorts of people in this country. I want it to be in French, too; that would be more immersive. As a result, I've begun learning French :)

Not a spic since there are white countries that speak those garbage languages. Assuming you don't speak some meme native language.
China is banned from 4chan and the other Slopes aren't that hated.
Could be India/Nepal/Bhutan/etc but we don't really hate them, they're just easily ass fractured.
Probably not an Eastern Yuropoor country.
There really aren't any Africans on /pol/ except the one Somalian and he's p chill desu.
That pretty much leaves the Sandpeople. Now Arabic covers a few OK by ME standards countries so that narrows it down to Farsi or more likely Yiddish. Have I found the Jew?

That would be a different meaning. The verb is in the passive and the subject and object are switched. The other anon is pointing out that word order doesn't matter in a highly inflected language I guess.

English does actually do this sometimes, although these days it comes across as deliberately poetic or archaicising. You can say "My eye the thing did scan" and it will still make sense to most literate English speakers that "the thing" is the object of the verb "did scan," and "my eye" is the subject. The more you know about grammar and the more experience you have with other languages, the easier it becomes to understand uncommon English grammar as well, and the more flexible you can be with it.

Communicating with African elites would actually be useful, those people handle lots of money and the most established among them are usually pretty well-cultured (not to mention they speak a more elegant French than most of the French elite).

You forgot
>reading French literature (esp. poetry) in the original
>banging Latin American and Middle Eastern chicks
>converse with Russian, Turkish, Iranian, Lebanese or Egyptian diplomats and intellectuals

American and agree, learning German now then on to spanish and hopefully chinese (french & russian one day would b cool). But other than childhood exposure, how does one pick up a language as casually as people here act like they do? I spend 3+ hours a day on german (pimsleur, anki, fluent forever and a grammar book) and it feels like it will be 3-4 years before I have the nuance I do in English.

Hercle, quidnam de me modo dixisti, cinaede? Te certiorem faciam me summa cum laude in classicos milites navigavisse, et multa impeta in Carthaginem fecisse, et plus quam CCC umbras in Orcum demisisse. Bello inhonesto doctus sum et optimus sum sagittarius inter omnes legiones Romanas. Es scopo alio modo mihi. Te prorsus delebo, edepol, elegantia quam ne Mars quidem conspexerit, haec verba memento. Credisne te posse tantis verbis cacatis me in litteris alloqui? Reputa, pathice.
