I want to read some literature about Stoicism to get a better understanding of it and its principles, but I don't know where to start. I'm hoping that I could get some suggestions?

>Dude just don't let the world affect you bro just like, if a bad thing happens it's only bad because you think it's bad
Stoicisim is meme philosophy that's trendy right now for some reason.

Fuck. Here I thought I'd actually find something to help teach myself some self-control.

Well, read Meditations if you want to learn about stoicism. I was just kinda joking.

it's easily accessible and requires relatively little effort to get into
bonus that it's old so it looks cool

This post should bother me but Seneca taught me that it is only a projection of my own ego and it doesn’t actually effect me. By reorienting myself and changing my perspective on the issue, I’ve over come this. Thank you for giving me an everyday exercise to reflect on these teaching and learn how to improve my life every day

I said this is another thread but the stoicist quotes in this book are basically identical to what I've gotten from years of going to a good therapist. I remarked to him that stoicism was basically what we've been doing and he said he'd recently realized the same thing after practicing for many years.
My point is that the stoics were right and figured out things that most modern people still lack. It all works and some of it could set your life on a better trajectory.

I studied nearly every primary and secondary source I could get my hands on for Stoicism, and tried really hard to implement it in my life.
Stoicism is good for:
>Controlling your emotions
>Not getting pissed off in a conversation and saying shit you can't take back
>Dealing with difficulties in the short-to-medium term
It's bad, especially if you go on r/Stoicism and follow it too closely, when:
>It suppresses your initiative to change/quit toxic work environments
>You become too willing to accept situations as 'out of your control' instead of struggling to negotiate to improve your position
>You deny the use of controlled/theatrical 'anger' as a tool to motivate others

I also strongly disagree with suppressing happy emotions. The Enchiridion argues against laughing too loudly or drinking more than a little at a party. Fine, it's un-stoic. But I don't think it reduces my ability to work hard, fufill my values, and stick up for others.

I'm glad I read it, but it let myself be a pushover and less charismatic due to over-calmness. I still use the techniques, but I don't identify as a 'Stoic.'

Here are some literature recommendations.
>Meditations by Aurelius
>Enchiridion by Epictetus
>A Guide to the Good Life by Irvine (most practical guide on techniques)
>Letters from a Stoic (I actually forget most of it, while I still vividly remember passages from the others, but "On the shortness of life" was definitely pretty good)

Pretty good analysis. For a long time I tried to find that one school of philosophy that I could follow 100% but the more philosophy and history of philosophy I read, the more I realized that is not the best way.
Most philosophies are not derived from first principles with mathematical precision anyway, they were best effort solutions and heavily influenced each other.
When it comes to pleasure I think my own approach is a bit close to Epicur than the stoics.

These are three late Stoic authors, two of which are strongly contaminated by Platonism (Seneca and Marcus). Also, they are all late Stoics, which means there is a whole lot of stuff to explore before them (Zeno, Cleanthes, and Chrysippus for a start). Beside that, they mostly discuss ethics. They are good for a start, but if OP wants to get a hold of Stoicism as a system, rather than just read glorified self-help books from antiquity, he should read something that engages with Stoic physics and logic.

Epictetus is the core, the Enchiridion being the groundwork of the philosophy. Marcus Aurelius' Meditations is a good read on the application of the practice as well.
Those are the two most basic texts everyone should read.

Go for the classics. Modern philosophy tries too hard to rope in politics.
