I'm an Anglican Christian (Church of England), and I am seriously thinking of converting to Catholicism
What books/essays would you recommend to someone on this journey?

1. «ANGLICANISM» IS A SUBSECT OF «PROTESTANTISM»; «PROTESTANTISM» IS ANTICHRISTIAN.

2. I RECOMMEND THESE WORKS:

— «SUMMA THEOLOGIÆ» BY: SAN TOMASSO D'AQUINO.

— «EL CASTILLO INTERIOR, O LAS MORADAS», BY: SANTA TERESA DE JESÚS.

— «CONCORDIA DEL LIBRE ARBITRIO CON LOS DONES DE LA GRACIA, Y CON LA PRESCIENCIA, PROVIDENCIA, PREDESTINACIÓN, Y REPROBACIÓN DIVINAS», BY: LUIS DE MOLINA.

— «DISPUTACIONES METAFÍSICAS», BY: FRANCISCO SUÁREZ DE TOLEDO.

Don't leave. Read J.I. Packer and J.C. Ryle. Find a church that is under the oversight of the Bishop of Maidstone.

John Henry Newman, Apologia Pro Vita Sua.

Newman was a rather brilliant Anglican who advanced the branch theory (Anglicanism is a valid branch of the Catholic Church) in the 19th century. The he studied and worked on the matter, the more the facts pressed him towards Catholicism.

Apologia Pro Vita Sua tells the story of his conversion -- which was a very big deal at the time, and became a best-selling book as a result.

He also wrote a fine work of theology called On the Development of Christian Doctrine.

In short, if you're seriously thinking about converting, Newman is a likely subject for your further inquiries.

OP, I am not going to recommend any particularly dense work of theology to you since I don't want to overwhelm you. That will come later. You can read Aquinas, Augustine, etc. later.

For now, I will recommend the books I always recommend to people interested in Catholicism: Joseph Ratzinger/Benedict XVI's three-part Jesus Of Nazareth series. Unlike most of Ratzinger/Benedict's stuff, this is not very theologically dense or complex. It's meant for normal readers. It's a very beautiful, compelling, prayer-filled look into what the Catholic Church teaches about Jesus Christ. I have seen it compared to the writings of the Church Fathers before. And the entire reason to convert from one branch of Christianity to another is because you're trying to find a truer relationship with Christ, right?

So, I highly recommend these books, because they will guide you on the path to doing exactly that.

Mainly because of the ordination of women. And at this point gay marriage is a matter of when rather than if. I don't want to belong to a church that changes with the winds; I want unfaltering tradition. Aesthetics also plays a part, yes. Although, both Anglicanism and Catholicism have quite a broad spectrum of different aesthetics and rituals

Also, Anglicanism is a pretty sad shell of what it used to be. I think I'm the only person under 50 at my church. It feels like a sinking ship

>One point that Shahak repeatedly emphasizes is that in traditional Judaism the nature of the ritual itself is absolutely uppermost, while the interpretation of the ritual is rather secondary. So perhaps a Jew who washes his hands three times clockwise might be horrified by another who follows a counter-clockwise direction, but whether the hand-washing were meant to honor God or to honor Satan would be hardly be a matter of much consequence.
https://www.unz.com/runz/american-pravda-oddities-of-the-jewish-religion/

That's what 'vain repetition' is. It's a Pharisee thing. Hardly the same as meditating on Christ's passion while you pray the rosary.

>a Jew who washes his hands three times clockwise might be horrified by another who follows a counter-clockwise direction

Confirmed for never having attended a Jewish ritual. It's common for parents to silently laugh with their children during the parts of the meal before graces when you're not supposed to speak. People get a great kick out of how goofy the details of the ritual can be.

Same, but in the U.S. I remain seriously interested in Catholicism, and Islam and Judaism too, but at this point I realize that I'm quite at home in the Christian mode of my parents and of their parents too. What I appreciate is a certain openness and honesty, spirit of free inquiry, even nonchalance with respect to the spiritual concerns of others. It is the least judgemental of Christian aspects, has a glorious history, and a liturgy (prayerbook) that RC actually copied (in idea) despite its relatively brief history. If it's 'dying' then so be it, what's best does. No mode of 'protestantism' has had a more successful history: I'll never change.

The Orthodox church is literally orthodox.
Also from what I've heard, it's more focused on your internal relationship with God.
