Haven't read enough of him to have a decent view. But from what I have, and from what criticism I have heard; I'm not yet convinced. Two things he's been lauded for that I've taken issue with; the mythopoetic language and what they call his rhetorical self-refence. In The Road, the mythopoetic language came across to me as jarring, as it did with other people I read the book with. It seems to me that if you are going to use such language, a)you can do it better, b)do it all the time or contrast it well enough. As far as The Road is concerned, I don't think he pulls it off as well as is said. It seemed to be to be either a work of boring gritty realism, or a mytho-poetic fairytale. Neither of them get done very well, or consistently well anyway, in the novel, as far as I am concerned. maybe he does it better elsewhere. He's been labelled as following a melvillean tradition of drawing attention to a text's status as rhetoric through the writing, and I assume this is what amounts to all the complaints over shitty grammar etc. I'm not convinced on the whole over the value of such literary devices. They didn't make me think about any such thing, they just disrupted my experience. I think this can be done better.

Mythopoetic. Good word for him
Anyway, Believe or deny the hype at your own inclination, but I think Blood Meridian is definitely more consistent with the style and worth a read. Don't be too quick to believe
