I used to be a good redditor and get upvotes and "gold" all the time in some of the "serious" subs, so it is not out of bitterness that I say Reddit is utter garbage.
It was better in 2013 (when I started using it), but quickly degenerated into sheer predictability. Or maybe it was predictable but didn't seem so to me because I was new to it, which is more likely.
The thing is that the content doesn't get removed, so if you do some searching you can find worthwhile stuff, but you can do the same here, only it's in the archives and there are not many keywords because threads don't usually have titles.

However, the ideological framework on Reddit is only one and you cannot escape it. This is why I left it. There is no richness, no originality, only total sterility.
If you try to talk literature to them, you will be bombarded with fashionable terms and academic prose only to find out that you are discussing with people who have no aesthetic sensibility whatever. I remember seeing a very long post by some woman who fancied herself a poetry expert criticizing a poem by saying that it did badly what Rupi Kaur (!) does well.
That is their level, and if you question it you are a white supremacists who cannot accept other "voices" and different "kinds of aesthetic aprehension".

Besides, it's all in English, and Anglos have a remarkably limited understanding of literary judgement - a fault I attribute to the sort of education that they receive in their universities (and which is spreading throughout the whole West).
Here on /lit/ the variety of nationalities is staggering and the freedom we have means that foreigners like me are able to taunt the Anglos and make them aware that there are many things on Heaven and Earth which cannot be dreamt of by the small-minded.

Academia compresses your imagination. It limits the boundaries of your thought. It establishes rules that cannot be broken. It penetrates your style, your face, your clothes, your hair, your skin. If you are an academic, you talk in a certain way. You act in a certain way. You think in a certain way. Even sex is only possible after an entirely rational set of prerequisites has been sistematically fulfilled.

The problem is that the incentive on Reddit is to converge on the most ingratiating approval-seeking tone and content so you get upvotes and awards. 4chan at least has multiple competing motivations for making posts, and anonymity helps by removing longer term attempts to gather status in the eyes of others.
