I wanted to make a ranked chart with our favorites. Here's a survey.

some books that i don't undertsand, why nobody will vote for them:

unbearable lightness of being
trainspotting

How would you go about voting a book series?
Enter the first book in it? Or the name of the series? How can I be sure the pollster will sum up those votes accordingly?

Ex: 5 people vote for Sea of Fertility. 1 for Spring Snow and 2 for Runaway Horses. Does it make 8 votes for the tetralogy? Or does it get compounded as 6 for Snow Spring and 7 for Runaway horses?

>> No.16944923

Series are counted as one.

>> No.16944967

>>16944906
Seems like it dilutes the count. I think a better way to do this would be to give each anon 10 'points' and let them distribute them to up to 10 books, so they could list 10 separate books, each with one point, or put their very favorite book at 5 points, one at 3, and one at 2, or something like that. I worry that having everyone able to name 12 books is going to result in (1) too wide of a field of nominations, where we end up with 100 books with 1 nomination, and (2) a normalized and somewhat bland 'top ten' where we end up replicating the same old list we always see as opposed to anything interesting or idiosyncratic.

The top ten should include Proust, Flaubert, Joyce, Cervantes and maybe Kafka. Instead we'll have:
>some gay Japanese LARPer
>some overrated Russians who read one French novel one day and decided to do the same
>a shitty Russian hack who hides his repressed depravity behind his meaningless writings
>muh American epic, I swear it's not a French novel but on the sea
>dude this book has a 1000 pages and I got memed into reading it, I will tell everyone it's good so they don't think I'm a fool
>well yes technically LoTR is genre fiction but it's actually different because you see...
>yeah the dude in the story was a sad pathetic low-life, since I felt it was me it must be the best book ever

A) you're a retard for expecting some sort of objective "best novels of all time" list made by public vote, when everyone knows the ranking positions and the nominated options in these lists mostly have to do with what people have read, i.e. a popularity contest, and not a curated list.
B) doubly retarded for expecting such a thing out of 4chan of all places.
C) even worse, you think someone who hasn't read every single book ever shouldn't be allowed to vote because they haven't read every book ever.*

*The reason I mentioned every book is because just as you have your qualms about Don Quixote appearing fifth (non issue), some other autist could say the same about Demons, or Terra Nostra, or Babyfucker, or Journey to the West or Mishima in their original languages, and yet you hold your very limited opinion (because I guarantee you haven't read more than 300 books in your entire lifetime) above that of others just as biased, for their ignorance and limited readings, as you are.

Of course I know that the only reason you Ameri-fags voted for the penis is because Melville was American. I'm saying that because you faggots instantly jump to the only book you've ever read (that you have to read because the author is American) therefore it's the best is retarded and gay. And to some degree you have to expect some objectivity so that we can agree on anything, therefore expecting some objective reasons for placing penis on number one should be found. However you instantly refer to the fact that the only reason it is number one is because Americans are retarded. That's what I said you retard.

>unironically invoking Chad memes
Yeah, you're an immature retard.
>that you have to read because the author is American
Weird how out of the top 10, only 2 books were actually written by Americans. Seems like you missed this crucial thing in your assblasted analysis.
>However you instantly refer to the fact that the only reason it is number one is because Americans are retarded.
No, you utter moron. I voted for it and I'm not even American. Mobyd Dick is quite likely the common denominator across all readers. Since more people might have read Moby Dick for whatever reason. more people might like it, which translates to it receiving more votes.
Popularity or how common it's been read is more likely an objective reason than your assumptions that it has to do with high school literature or ignorance (both entirely subjective since the survey is anonymous).
>Just because I said the best book is from Spain doesn't mean I love everything spain

Ok so five impactful author. Do you even want to start to compare the enormous list of European writers? Are you serious? Let's not kid ourselves of relativity because you could get more writers from at least five nations in Europe with at least five impactful works. You speak of relativity, however if for example I would take England, I could match your five with a population around 50-60 million, compared to your 300 million. I agree that America is more significant than Europe in the "grand" scheme of things lately, everybody knows what. You as Americans should be ashamed that you have led the cultural and political environment in the west to the extremes that you have. If you want to take credit for everything culturally and politically, it stands to reason that you should have the blame for all the negative aspects of those as well, and I hope you understand as well as everyone else, that the negatives far outweigh the positives.
