I'm thinking of taking German classes at the Goethe Institut here in New York. Does anyone have any experience with or insight into this place? I can't learn with Duolingo.

It's good, as far as language schools go. If you're not too dumb you might be able to take tests to skip some levels.

Private instructors are still better, if you can afford it.

My friend went to a course in Goethe Institute and this is what I understood from him.
>Sessions last 2 hours every week for normal course, and are 4 hours every
week if you choose the intensive course.

>The course material is a textbook called Studio 21. The instructor will go through each chapter and help clear grammar concepts.
>There is also an exercise book.

>There will be listening exercises and reading in the class.

>You and your classmate will usually try and speak in German and have mini discussions about the chapter.

>There were also these mini exercises out of the book. Teacher would give out pictures and some sentences and you and your classmates would try and solve them.

I would definitely recommend finishing the A1 and A2 course with Goethe Institute. Its really helpful to build a good foundation and the instructor will help clear a lot of questions you might have at first.

You can't use Duolingo as the main source of language if you want to self learn. You have to use multiple sources and books to build a good foundation.

I recommend:

>Deutsch Welle: Nicos Weg. Basically a film split into 3 levels (A1, A2, B1) and you have a bunch of reading/listening/speaking exercises over each short snippet of the film. Its really helpful and will explain a lot of grammar while improving your listening.

>Micheal Thomas Audio course

>Grammar Drills, textbook with grammar explanations and exercises

>Easy german on Youtube. Interviews from Germany subtitles are in German and English

>Learn German with Anja on YouTube. She explains grammar in a really simple way.

>Memrise and Anki, apps to memorize vocabulary.
