>There is nothing wrong with psychoanalysis or finding out about your past as long as you don't confuse knowing about yourself with knowing yourself. The five thousand page dossier is about yourself: the content of your mind which is conditioned by the past. Whatever you learn through psychoanalysis or self observation is about you. It is not you. It is content, not essence. Going beyond ego is stepping out of content. Knowing yourself is being yourself, and being yourself is ceasing to identify with content.

Yes, Brentano and Husserl had both proved him wrong on his concept of the unconscious before he had even graduated, and yet he never took the hint.

Freud took Brentano's classes at the same time as Husserl and a couple others (I think Meinong, but I'm really not sure on that one). Freud already had a concept of the unconscious worked out, but Brentano and Husserl (semi)famously shot him down by showing that Freud was still using the same concept of representation as they were, but that this concept is completely incapable of explaining the causal efficiency of a representation that is *not* being represented at the moment. Essentially, Freud is still indebted to Cartesian transparency but doesn't realizes it.

That’s interesting, because advancing Freuds argument to get out of this position would necessarily justify Jungs synchronistic dito (if i understand things correctly).

As a gift back to you for this hitherto unknown fact i’d recommend looking on Google books for Freud and bnai b’rith, and freuds kabbalistic sources (which has now been confirmed he did not want to disclose)

Pretty much, or at least it is hard to see otherwise how he could avoid it.
Obviously the problem of efficient causation is something pretty much every theory containing a certain degree of psychologism must either tangle with or bury, but it is really weird how obvious the issue is in Freud, which essentially renders meaningless anything he has to say regarding superior psychology, and yet how he was still viewed as such a trailblazer.

I am thinking about reading Freud, pls advise on if doing so would be helpful to me. I wish to gain an understanding of the human psyche strong enough for me to write deep characters in my stories. As a result I've been reading up on psychology and spirituality, mostly via textbooks. Would Freud be helpful?
