16903378 No.16903378 [Reply] [Original]

I thought about buying Gibson's Neuromancer as a christmas present for my mother who is a fan of science fiction and literature in general. Should I?
I also want to read it myself.

Your answer is blunt and straight to the point, anon. I like it.
I'm not a massive reader myself (mostly because I'm lazy). But I like Science Fiction in general and been quite interested in Cyberpunk.
How long and/or heavy is the book?

I know, anon. As far as I'm aware, she likes Science-Fiction massively, but she hasn't dabbled into Cyberpunk. I think it'll be something different for her, something new; but ultimately somehting enjoyable.

Sci-fi always has too much sex, even old and classic stuff like Dune. I'd be embarrassed to give a book like this to my parents. On the other hand they really liked the Game of Thrones show... But that also means they are brainle plebs who couldn't possibly enjoy good sci-fi. So I'd rather... not give them any books at all, fuck these plebs.

Neuromancer is a real trip. It will be kinda hard to read at the start due to all the technobabble, but it gets better as you re-read it. Which is not hard, considering it is a short and fast paced book; at least it is faster and somewhat better than count zero and mona lisa overdrive (what a fucking drag this one was)

I don't think sex scenes will be a problem, sex isn't really a taboo for us Finns; I remember watching stuff like HBO's Rome with her etc. Heck, I remember walking in when my grandma was watching Rome, back when it first came out and I was a kid. Augustus (Octavian) was railing his wife in one scene and my grandma didn't flinch at all and just said: "That's pretty brutal.", without giving a single shit.
