Almost everyone here is a brainlet. Virgil didn't 'make up the Aeneid. While still probably bullshit, the story of Roman's being descended from Trojans was a well known folktale at that time with different competing versions. Virgil's became the most famous.

I agree whith this anon. While the aeneid is purely a work of literature, romans could be the descendants of the trojans. Just look at the etruscans, their neighbours, which are also said to be originally strangers of the italic peninsula and whose closest linguistic relatives are the inhabitants of a small greek Island. If it's true that the etruscans came from greece (which might not be true), the romans may also be the descendants of anatolians and maybe of the trojans even.

However, I would not say it is unlikely that survivors and refugees of a war or siege of some sort ended up in Italy. There is much debate as to whether the Trojan War occurred, and if so at what scale. Even back then, Thucydides questioned the scope of the war.
