Potential Cover Art:

Pick a chapter and start writing footnotes, it takes far less time than you've spent browsing the board before reading this.

Instructions on the first page of the doc
Have a little known fact about Moby-Dick? Know of an underrated insight into the many themes of the book? Want to prove to /lit/ once and for all that you aren't a pseud?
I'm happy with the pace we've been going at. Right now we have about 50 endnotes and footnoted chapters. There is a lot of overlap with the footnotes, but not every chapter with a footnote has an endnote and not every chapter with an endnote has footnotes. We've recently recruited an anon who works at the Nantucket Historical Society so get hyped for all of the really cool shit we'll be able to add to our book.

Cover design submissions are still being accepted and the three above are not finalized, so if you have any input let's hear it

We have decided that the physical published book will be slightly different than the pdf/epub/ebook version that will be released online.
The ebook version will contain absolutely everything. That means ever shitpost, every cover design. No submission will be excluded from the ebook.
The physical book is constrained by a maximum number of pages, Lulu maxes out at 800, so we will most likely have to make a few cuts to save space, but everything cut will be noted so that it can be referred to in the ebook. The physical copy will only have a single cover which has yet to be determined.
I hope that everyone will take the Christmas break to write endnotes and footnotes for chapters that are missing, or finish the chapter that you previously called. Those who have written one or multiple endnotes will tell you that it doesn't take much time. Write as many endnotes and footnotes as you can, every submission gets added to the doc

Belongs to whatever chapter OP feels worthy:
>Herman Melville was a scoundrel who stumbled into brilliance when he discovered the seventeen manuscripts left by John Webster. Fearing a reputation of a minor Petrach, the American lothario was hard at work composing short stories and novellas, anything perhaps to expound upon the nugget of brilliance that lay before him. And so now that we've equipped ourselves with the necessary knowledge can we access the thematic and literary aspects of the chapter that lies before us. Ahab and Ishmael have had their first conformation. The rough demeanour of the former doesn't sit well with the latter. I believe this instance to be a reference to the great philosopher, Schopenhauer. The morose and despondent view this man had of women, Melville recontextualizes and applies it to the heroic ideal. It is important to note the implicit references Herman hints at of Ishmaels crossdressing. His correspondence with his sister details the rudimentary excursion, that served as the model and inspiration. The enticement of the wonderful Nathaniel Hawthorne, a sweet alliance annexed and soon after discarded (for Herman's own nefarious purposes no doubt), leading poor Nathaniel to the grave. I still haven't quite gotten over it, a cold blooded writerly bludgeoning.

>The death of God liberated man from the burden of debt to his phantasma of an omnipotent being. Unlike the ancient greek or the jew the (post) christian man is free from sacrifice worship and repenting. There is no being looming over man who demands of him often which he can not figure out for himself.
>Who believes christianity ought to still hold all these characteristics, and that Jesus' death was nothing but the formalistic forgiveness of some first sin, that still leaves a life of penitenceand servitude has simply returned to the time pre Christ's death and changed nothing. The man who lives in this actual understanding of Christianity is little different to the BC man in respect to one who sees Christ as having brought the true blessing of relieving mankind from himself, from God. There should be no hatred towards God in this man, for to him Christ simply showed man what he actually already was. Though God is omnipresent, there is no first sin, no debt, no gratitude that needs amends; man was as free before Christ as he is now after his death, yet there are stll those who live as though their life is

A beautiful postmodern work that puts our conventional understanding of Moby Dick to shame. A whale hunting the human, genius! A massive Dick atop the S.S. Essex, perhaps a critique of the consequences of the sexual revolution. As for the phrase, “/lit/ group of individuals,” it references some of the greatest minds of our time. True literary geniuses whose work is underappreciated in many circles, for their intellect provokes lesser men.

[1](After S.S. Essex) In 1820 a massive sperm whale rammed a Nantucket whaling ship, sending it to the bottom of the Pacific Ocean. Stranded 1,500 miles from land, the surviving crew’s horrific quest for survival came to symbolize the primordial struggle between man and nature. A critique of Smellville copying off of actually exciting real life events.

Notice also the large protruding snout, or nose of the whale. It leads me to believe that the whale is also a merchant of some kind.
