Anyone here read this? I remember reading this a couple of years ago and it was incredibly right about many things happening in the future. It took very long to read though so I consider rereading (or relistening) it as an audiobook.

>Here's a couple of compositional facts to help you all contextualize what I was trying to do: I actually had several arguments with my first editor, Michael Schellenberger, because he was convinced that I needed to make Conphas a women to broaden the appeal of the work. I needed, he insisted, an empowered female character. The reason I fought that, despite all the insecurity of being a first time author, was that it smacked of tokenism. He told me I would regret it, that my points would go unappreciated, and that the majority of women would be alienated by my books.

Fuck me, this is a long winded book. No idea how I am going to manage another 14 of these. I may have to throw in another series between books.
I am enjoying it for the most part though.

Team ranking so far is;
Nynaeve>Rand>Lan>Moirane>Perrin>Thom>Egwene>Mat

Nynaeve is best, no doubt, and Rand is up there only because we have spent so much time with him.
Egwene is so fucking useless. She wanted an adventure, now she is constantly crying about danger. Also she runs off with any guy who looks at her. The group is in constant danger, Egwene, maybe it isn't the best time to start fooling around with some pacifistic just because he smiled at you!
Mat is the worst though. I get he is meant to be some mischief maker, but what an absolute bellend he is. Does nothing but cause trouble and constantly keeps blabbing his mouth to strangers.

If you want more Dying Earth then read Rhialto the Marvelous, it's not nearly as good as Cugel's books but it's worth reading

If you want to try his standalone books the best choices are The Dragon Masters, Emphyrio and The Languages of Pao

If you want a series you can't go wrong with Lyonesse (Arthurian fantasy). If you want something light and pulpy then Tschai is good. Cadwal Chronicles (especially the latter two books) is some of his weakest work in terms of story telling but in other aspects he's at his peak.

Her visions come true for a reason. Them not getting together isn't some epic tragedy where they were unwillingly separated. It's more like there was no reason for them to ever be together except proximity, and once they left the village there was nothing holding them together as a couple. They just grow apart. There's no drama in it really, both characters are pretty mature about it and clear the air between them pretty early on in the story so there's no hard feelings. To the contrary they're both relieved the other took it so well.

Also, if it makes you feel better Rand is technically the first one to move on and gets with one of his future wives almost immediately after he officially dumped Egwene, and Egwene even encouraged the relationship. He actually gets with each of his 3 lovers before Egwene even loses her virginity.

Junkyard Plant / The Cosmic Computer - H. Beam Piper, part of the Terro-Human Future History Series

The former title is the original. This is the the novel version of his short work "Graveyard of Dreams". I enjoyed this version more, though not by much.
The book is very much pro-capitalism. The characters strongly believe that there's little that a limited liability corporation and the judicious use of violence can't solve.
Unfortunately none of the covers are particularly representative of the actual content, as its relatively light on action, and the scene depicted in the cover is the only time a significant firefight occurs.
Most of the novel is concerned with the protagonist returning from University in the hope the he will be able to revitalize his junkyard planet, but the only thing everyone wants to do is find the the cosmic computer known as Merlin and have it solve all their problems. So much so that that it's become a religion. The protagonist co-opts this religious fervor and hopes to redirect it towards planetary restoration, improved trade, and invigoration of their stagnant culture.
I assume it's a reference to the Reconstruction era following the Civil War, which is probably the System States War in this universe.

Its when a story uses game mechanics as a plot device. Litrpgs usually have things like stats and leveling up or gaining skills while game lit is a more loose definition like for example a gamelike world that has adventurers or some sort of guild but doesn't necessarily have stats or number to go along with it.
Typically such books are in a portal fantasy setting but its not really required or a defining feature. An example for litrpg would be something like Charles Dean's The Bathrobe Knight while an example for gamelit would be something like Ready Player One or Sidequest: in Realms Ungoogled. Quality of such works vary widely and there are certain tropes associated with the genres but if you don't take it too serious and read it like schlocky pulp it can be great fun.

In order for a book to be one of my favorites, then it has to have strong characters. I want to know what they're thinking, and how they're processing the world around them.
But in order to keep me reading at all, the book needs to be intriguing. If it can make me wonder what's happening next, or leave me in suspense for what is happening currently, then I'm satisfied. I don't like books that just tell me everything that's happening directly. Because then I have nothing to think about. It's not stimulating. That's why I don't care much for action sequences. Because it's just like "they did this attack, then that attack, then dodged..." I'm sorry, but the plot is halted just so characters can run around looking cool doing actiony stuff? Boring.

Dialogue. If you characters talk like robots or teenage girls then it's impossible to get invested into a book. Bad dialogue is also a Canary for a bad writer in general.

Characters have sex, but it isn't described in detail to the reader if that's what mean. No lurid descriptions of genitals from Jordon. He's not coy about it either though, he makes it unambiguously clear when sex happened or is happening. The only time he gets really vague is regarding fetish stuff, particularly Graendal's depravities, which he never gives any details about but apparently involves lots of nude men and women "performing" in front of guests.

So not exactly for kids, but suitable enough for teens.

>> No.16908239

A good setting is like the lure on a fishing line. It gets my attention, makes me come in for a bite. The characters are the barbed hook that keep me on the line. What you should take away from this metaphor is that your setting should be interesting at a distance and your characters should be interesting in detail. This is because a story is principally about the characters and the setting is mostly backdrop. A fully realized setting is always a plus, and I will in fact read your appendices, however many you include, with great relish, but you should never, ever devote more energy to your setting than your characters.

Both these elements are important, you absolutely should care about both, but keep your priorities straight.

Basically this, which is why prefer soft worldbuilding. Don't get me wrong, hard-ass worldbuilding can be fun too, but most writers either can't or won't put in the time to craft massive interconnected worlds.
As I like to put it: The world is the bones of a story: it keeps it all together, but its flaws aren't visible unless you're really looking for them.
The plot is the muscles: It moves the body, stopping it from being just a static showcase of people and setting, and can be thrilling to follow.
The characters are the skin and features: At the forefront of everything, they're often the first thing you will experience and it's hard to get invested in something if they fail to call your attention.
While a book can be worth a read for either of these main 3 features, if you're to follow a book lacking in one or two of these areas, it's more often than not the characters that is the one handled well enough.

Venli's flashbacks are played so straight that they're completely uninteresting: They're EXACTLY what every single one of us expected and as such only the first one and maybe the one where they discover new forms are needed, every other one is redundant.
Instead, Eshonai's are far more interesting because we actually see her slowly grow into the military leader, and desu, her final sequence made me emotional.
Eshonai is just a far better character and Brandon should've left Venli fucking die.

It's a classic romance thing. A woman's virginity is a sacred gem or something, the symbol of her innocence and virtue and it's one of the few things in life which, once taken, cannot be recovered.
In death, the victim avenges herself of having been wronged. The notion here is that she would take her own life --not exactly Christian-- or get killed while trying murder her tormentor in order to restore her good honor.
