You've given no rubric or metrics by which you will judge submissions.

especially in this first experimental round, i've intentionally left the prompt fairly open--i've encouraged only originality of thought and quality of argument. this has included the possibility of creative submissions as well.

my own idiosyncratic judgment is the basis of this first round. depending on its popularity, i intend to include more judges in the future--at which point, some type of "rubric or metrics" would be necessary and made transparent.

oh and why did you make the prize dune? I would find like a dozen books that would be cooler to win than dune looking at your library pics.

about 17 now. roughly 10 analytic and 7 creative.

DUNE seemed like a safe place to start.

what books or prizes would entice you more/the most? this has been a first swing at something like this; very eager to refine it for future competitions. let me know what would really get you to consider participating in something like this--either in terms of prompts or prizes.

idk but I bet you have some old books taking up space in your library that you do not need anymore. They might be about obscure topics, but that makes them even more interesting. They don't cost you a penny so you could actually select like the top three essays.
As for prompts I am open to anything, won't participate this time though because I am busy

Hey thanks a lot for the interest, very kind. Like i asked the other anon, I’d love to hear what types of prompts or prizes might interest you/get you to submit eventually.

To give you some sense of what i have lined up, I’m thinking of offering the folio society limited edition Alice in Wonderland; the Harper Perennial illustrated edition of Lord of the rings; the full boxed special edition set of Calvin and Hobbes; things like that. I’m planning on loosely related and playful prompts to encourage either analytic or creative approaches.

I’ve also considered sponsoring things like a “pykewater chess tournament” or something that I could collaborate with chess.com on; to that end, i would offer the prize of a nice custom finely crafted chess board or something like that.

I’m trying to branch out to more specific realms as well: poetry competition, play-writing, even maybe some material arts or graphic design competitions with corresponding prizes.

I’m mostly interested in providing provocative prompts and competitions that anons are actually compelled to participate in, though, so whatever feedback you’re willing to give I’d really love to take.

I'm mostly interested in honing my writing and reasoning skills through the prompts. I would like to develop more eloquent writing along with the ability to reason logically and convincingly. The latter is more important for me as continuous practice and development would help in both day-to-day life and my professional development. Seeing that this is my goal, I would most likely participate through an analytical rather than creative contribution. Thus, I would be happy with every prompt which is not too restrictive in the sense that it limits submissions strictly to the creative field.

As far as the prizes go, I think it's very generous of you to offer them in the first place.

Perhaps something I could suggest which ties in to the other sections of your website is offering a short reading list for people who are interested in the basic premise of the prompt (4-5 books or other media to serve as inspiration). For example, I would say that the basic premise of this month's prompt is politics in space so some good recommendations for those who are looking to gain some inspiration or read works related to it would be the likes of Dune, Foundation, Hyperion, perhaps a non-fiction work on the moon treaty or outer space treaty, etc. I believe this can both work as an stepping block into the competition for those who would like to participate, but lack the knowledge to write a meaningful contribution on the topic, as well as a brief introduction into the field as opposed to the more extensive lists you create.

Yes.

>>16896696
This is absolutely golden feedback, thank you. I will absolutely incorporate your idea of providing a recommended reading list per prompt--that's a fantastically subtle suggestion.

do you think you would respond better to a prompt that asks for honed analytical writing based on a "fun" or "playful topic," e.g. couching the compulsion to hone your writing within a greater topic; or can you imagine a type of competition in which the use of "honed writing" and "reasoning skills" is itself the essence of the prompt somehow?
like i really respect and see your impulse at its full value--i am now curious what "gamifying" that type of desire might look like.
it also leads me to consider what "gamifying" and providing competition for other perennial concerns anons have, e.g. in engaging things like "self-help" or questions on how to "live well" as substantive focuses of the prompts, etc.

very very sharp, anon, thank you again.

Using a greater topic rather than something strictly related to reasoning is preferable as it allows for a greater diversity of submissions which might incite more people to participate. The other option is far too limiting for what you are trying to achieve

Based rapture. This is the kind of effort /lit/ needs right now. Thanks for dedicating your time to this, and offering those prizes. I'll say that those are definitely the kind of things that'll grab my interest, and a fair few others I'd reckon. Still trying to work on my own submission for this, might not get it in, but I'll definitely participate in future competitions!
