I'm sure you know those were a genre of photograph from the era, widely practiced by spiritualists in Europe and US/Canada etc. It was called 'spirit photography' and many of the photographers were axposed by various means as frauds, including, and perhaps especially, William Hope, the photographer of the above picture of Yeats.
