Music is an innately superior form of art to literature.

Discuss.

your nose is an inherently superior form of life to your tongue.

A collection of stimuli purposefully organized in such a way as to convey an abstract concept or emotion to a potential audience, often for the purpose of personal enjoyment.

They're both capable of expressing entirely different things, enjoyment of the two shouldn't be mutually exclusive.

Music is better at conveying basic emotions, lit is capable of more nuance.

For pure emotion, music might be suited. But when trying to bring an 'abstract concept' across to an audience, the language of literature is far more suited.

How can something meant for personal enjoyment be considered superior from an outsider perspective?

OP here, going to have to disagree with you there.

Listen to the album I posted. Try to "get it" in any less than ten full listens, focusing on nothing else.

It won't happen.

I'm a musician and I'm going to have to call you out on your bullshit. Music can't convey abstract concepts, it can give you the pure emotion but there is no musical technique to explain/explore the emotion intellectually.

Given that one of the best album of all time is inspired by literature...
I beg to differ good sir.

only in the minds of hipster /mu/tants. truth is, it doesn't even hold a candle to some of the true classics.

When things are inaccessible due to the complex nature of the songwriting rather than aesthetics, then yes, inaccessible = nuanced.

I would argue the opposite. Literature can better represent the human condition, including the full range of emotions, while music may be emotional, but the way emotion is found through music is within the nuances of the music.

>> No.1687534

They are merely different. The way I see it, music is like visual art: it accompanies; it sets an emotion.

>> No.1687541

They are different forms of expression, which attain their greatness in different ways. Prokofiev's 3rd piano concerto is as good as any piece of litterature out there, but generally I find good litterature to be far easier to come across. I can't remember the last time I heard a modern song on the radio that I really, really cared for, but I can go down to my local bookstore and find something worthwhile quite easily.
