So how is one supposed to arrange ones bookshelves?
>alphabetically by author last name
What do I do for books that don't have a (single) author? Where do I put my Bibles?
What do I do if I have the same book in multiple editions, but in one the author is "Zhuangzi" and in the other "Chuang Tzu"?
What do I do with books in languages that use different alphabets?
>by category
Within the category one would face the same difficulties. Nor does every book fit only one category, nor does every category overlap cleanly with two others such that one could solve the problem by putting the in-between books in between.

How do you arrange your books?
Any libraryfags here?

>> No.16869520

You would need an industrial volume of books for this to even matter. This thread is midwittery and circus of appearance at finest. Why don't you read those books instead of worrying about their placement?

Excellent post, thank you for clearing that up.
I do read my books. Before I had overflowing bookshelves randomly arranged and stacks everywhere, which made finding a book when I want it a difficult exercise. I have decided to buy proper bookshelves now, and I am wondering how I should arrange them.

The "good" shelfs: books aranged in a pleasing manner, books by same author chronological
Other shelfs: Alphabetically by author, and chronologically

If you have an appropriately sized shelving system then the overall ordering won't matter, since everything will be centralized enough for you to find books you want heuristically.
The ordering of books matters in a library proper because you have multiple centralized "nodes" which heuristically can't be parsed in reasonable time.

I suppose that's true. Heuristic ordering is how I used to do it (while my bookshelves were still sufficient). But I noticed that it tends to degrade over time and become disordered. Therefore a rule would be useful, I thought.

I'll have a look at it, I saw it's on libgen.
It's probably not worth it for my quantity of books, but the subject interests me beyond my own situation.

What about ancient works where the exact date is unknown?
What about anthologies?
I suppose separating broadly by region (West, India, China/East Asia, since the latter are generally the ones hard to date) and then not being too autistic would do it.

fiction by alphabet
non fiction, it depends on your collection, using the DDC as a basis is a good idea, but if you have a large collection of specialized books on a specific topic (eg 50 books on just greek philosophy) you would be better of figuring out your own personal categories for that part of your collection

>What do I do for books that don't have a (single) author?
first listed author, or separate category for compilations
>Where do I put my Bibles?
nonfiction-religion (inb4oxymoron)
>What do I do if I have the same book in multiple editions, but in one the author is "Zhuangzi" and in the other "Chuang Tzu"?
pick one, just be consistent in the which system of romanization you use, i.e if you pick pinyin for chinese you put both in under zhuangzi, but you would also use pinyin for an authof of which you only have one booked that happens to use a non-pinyin romanization (i.e. you would put kuo still under pinyin of guo)
although it must be said that zhuangzi would also go under nonfiction-philosophy
>What do I do with books in languages that use different alphabets?
see previous question
>Within the category one would face the same difficulties. Nor does every book fit only one category, nor does every category overlap cleanly with two others such that one could solve the problem by putting the in-between books in between.
you can either use worldcat for reference or better just put it in the category where you think you will be most likely to look

A lot of the Adelphi catalog is on libgen, which is a great thing because all their books are good.
>It's probably not worth it for my quantity of books, but the subject interests me beyond my own situation.
He owes Borges a lot, but the book is actually interesting and gives you some insight upon the problem of the organization of knowledge. There is a huge tradition dating back to Medieval times that deal with the issue (anything but trivial) of arranging books in libraries. It has many implications.

Italian is also surprisingly readable for me. I wonder if this would be an effective way to learn Italian.

Making do with the few instruments you have is probably the best way to learn a language. I learned English on here for necessity, now I can read 1000+ pages novels very easily. Foreigners who learn Latin by speaking it are better than Italians who learn it at school through grammar and translations.
