reminder thread. less than a week to submit:

The Pykewater Library is happy to kick off its first monthly writing competition with some classic Sci-Fi. The winner of the competition will receive a new copy of the illustrated Folio Society publication of Frank Herbert’s Dune.

Prompt: Please write an essay on the idea of outer space as a political frontier.

Conditions: Essays may be exploratory or argumentative in nature. Minimum of 250 words, maximum of 5,000. To enter, please submit in Microsoft Word format or as a PDF to pykewater@gmail.com with the subject line “Pykewater Challenge: Dune.” All essays should be submitted by 11:59 PM, Nov. 30th, 2020.

The winning essay will be announced by mid-December and will be featured on the Pykewater website.

opens it to more creative efforts. at least one submission pushed below that as a work of poetry.

i've said to anons before: these are general guidelines. quality of work, regardless of style or length, is really what i am after/interested in reading.

i would agree that writing a 250 traditional essay, one that would be convincing at all, would be...challenging.

beyond the fact that the prize comes from folio society, there is no formal connection.

i think they make some beautiful volumes and plan on offering more of their books as prizes for future competitions. not committed to them beyond that.

Seems dumb. Politics arise around an issue once basic human needs have been fulfilled for most parties within a particular context.

Tribal humans generally aren't very political within their village for the same reason astronauts aren't very political on the ISS; the only issue is literally, "will we be alive tomorrow?"
