Clearly you didn't read Anna Karenina, and I'm guessing you're underaged if you're claiming War and Peace is the best.

I'm scared it's too thicc for me. What if i can't finish it bros? I made it through Stephen King's The Stand and even the Dark Tower series, but I'm scared I'll get filtered on actual literature. What if I only make it a couple chapters in and can't figure out what the fuck is going on? I'm scared.

You'll know what's going on, especially if you're reading Tolstoy. The most confusing part about these books are keeping track of names:

The book's own author thought his other novel was better (and was right). W&P is still top tier though.

Still a good book, it isn't even hard to read, although I didn't manage to complete it when we were assigned to read it in school. But if you're in the right mood you can read hundreds of pages of it in a day, albeit it is indeed a bit long for the general reader

It does pick up, the first 100 pages aren’t really about the main characters, and it isn’t clear who the main characters will be, Pierre has a great arc. It’s not my favorite book, but it is truly great, Tolstoy has bursts of pure poetry that make it all worth it.

In the original Russian or which translation? I read the PV translation and I thought I was reading a children's book.

I’ve only read the PV translation, and while it’s often pretty stilted, the battle scenes have a really powerful kinetic energy. The scene in AK where Levin is out working with the peasants also comes to mind, it always reminds me of an acid trip.

I don't disagree. It is a stupendous work and it's hard to believe that a mere human could write such a work as this. I only wish I could have read it in Russian instead of English.

Tolstoy almost made a point to write in a clear and simple way, not unlike Hemingway. What do you mean by children’s book? Writing in a fancy style doesn’t make you sound smart or grown up.

>> No.16828737

>>16825931
I read both Garnett’s and Maude’s translation, and I disliked his writing for the exact same reason with both translations. It reads like a wooden piece of shit soap opera, so I bet all the translations have this quality since it’s actually the way he wrote and the translations I read both reflected this style. I have also tried reading Hadji Murad, and it felt like cavemen talking to each other. Tolstoy is a shit writer and his fans need to read a good fucking book for a change

don't worry, it's literally a soap opera. it's not challenging (or rewarding) like The JR or Women and Men, it's practically a knife edge away from being YA.

The best book ever written has to be a poetry collection. The fewer pages, the better – less room for faults.
