It's depressing how many "educated" Americans have genuinely never read a book.

There are tons of people who use Spark Notes to finish High School with straight A's, then go to a big name schools, and then spend the rest of their days working as bugmen in some soulless city.

Sometimes they end up making more money than rednecks, but they're as uneducated as farm hands.

How?
Our teachers would give us lists of quotes from the book and ask us to identify speakers and context. They weren't important quotes either. It was annoying at the time, and it must have sucked if you had a bad memory, but it did force you to read the book.
