this fat bastard is my favourite poet, does he sound much better in spanish? Should I learn Spanish and read him in the original?

This is poetry too. Would it sound any better in Spanish? Step over, pseud.

Absolutely. I was reading him in Spanish once and I was curious about how the hell did it work in English so I read some English translation of a poem and realized they completely butchered the beauty and didn't emphasize where he emphasize so it lost poetic force. I'm surprise his work is strong enough to survive translation. Glad you liked it.

Reading translated poetry is like kissing a woman through a veil.

Yes, he is much better in his original language, like every single poet in existence.
I would recommend learning Spanish as the lit quality/language difficullty ratio is among the best of all languages. Lots of great poetry, many of which is poorly translated that you could be enjoying effortlessly in around 2-3 years of work.
Another language with a similar ratio is Italian. French has (arguably) more high quality lit, but the effort needed to learn is higher.
