How do I learn to derive meaning for myself?

I often find that the purpose of a lot of books dont click for me until I have other people spell out what they believe, then I can start to put together pieces and figure out what I believe
Up until then I find most books to just be random collections of thoughts and words and finding a greater meaning in all of it isn't something I can figure out

Is this a skill I can work on or am I a retard?

If you could be a happy bird or dolphin for one day, which would you pick?

By debating it out. It works as a check and helps you interpret it more broadly

How do you remember all the things to debate, though?

For example, I've read Fear and Loathing twice and seen the movie a half dozen times but I still have no idea what the point of the entire story is about, no matter how many times I go through it

It comes up and wiki helps and using a socratic debate style eventually muscle memory takes over and you can start pushing the boundaries of the metaphysics without needing to resort to secondaries once your metaphysics is mature

It's about a man finding meaning through his depravity. What do you think about that?

checked
I think it's an interesting premise but I didnt find much meaning in the story, and I don't think Duke or Gonzo did either

I saw someone once describe it as Thompsons description of the failure of 60's drug culture (especially considering the comparison of the two vs Vegas regulars) and I think that resonates with me a lot more than finding meaning through depravity, but I don't believe that kind of revelation would have ever come to me if someone else hadn't spurred it
It's not my idea, its a copy of someone elses

Ah I see what you mean, maybe you're just self conscious?
