Because it's an open secret on /lit/ that culture and literature is based on the greeks to a great degree. This goes for all western literature. Therefore by starting with the greeks you will recognize plotlines and references everywhere in your later readings, understand what they are and their origins.

It's just a very well-formed start. If Chinese, Indian etc etc were more formalized you could start there but the Greeks are intensely metaphysically deep.
